When you do a background check on a person, do you tell them?

No.

If they pass, keep hanging out.

If they fail, move on and look for someone else.

Maybe if you get into a LTR you might mention that way back when you did a background check, because it's basically irrelevant at that point.

By now I have admitted many embarrassing things to my bf that I would not have dared to mention early on

Agreed.

How do you do a background check on a person, btw?

In the US, very easily if you know the person’s full name—and especially if it’s an uncommon name and you know the address and DOB.

There are agencies here that can conduct official background checks.

If you obtain the person's first and last name and city (in addition to their photo) it is often easy to locate their social media and do a little investigation on your own......

Just Google the name. All sorts of legit and not-so-legit background check entities will pop up. It’s hard to tell what’s legit. I know because I’ve Googled my own name.

They usually offer something like a 7-day free or low-cost trial. After the trial, if you don’t cancel, they would take something like $29.99 out of the debit or credit card number you provided. It can be very hard to cancel.

I don’t do background checks. It’s an invasion of privacy.

It’s a start.

However, (and I have no idea of what privacy laws are like in the land down under), in Uncle Sugar territory, one can check public records, like state department of revenue, DMV, police records, credit reporting agencies, etc.
