A man in the United Kingdom was arrested earlier this week after he took a jet ski from Scotland to the Isle of Man to visit his girlfriend. Dale McLaughlan, 28, from Irvine, Scotland, was sentenced to four weeks in jail on Monday for violating the Isle of Man’s coronavirus laws by traveling to the island on Friday, the BBC reported.

The island has been closed to non-residents since March with only a few exceptions, according to the Isle of Man website. The BBC reported that violations could face three months in jail or a maximum fine of 10,000 pounds (approximately $13,500).

According to the BBC, McLaughlan had never driven a jet ski before he bought one last week to cross the Irish Sea, from the Isle of Whithorn in Scotland to Ramsey on the Isle of Man. He reportedly believed the trip was only going to take him 40 minutes, but some bad weather extended the trip to four and a half hours, according to The New York Times.

Although the two were able to spend time together over the weekend, McLaughlan was arrested and charged on Monday.

What a brave heart.

That's a long jail time, I have seen much less for violence. And a huge fine. Poor thing.

Another pic...

... from This BBC Article, which does not say how the girlfriend reacted to her beau's reckless attempt.

Scotsman Dale McLaughlan, 28, is a roofer by trade.

He doesn't know how to swim. [I am beginning to like this guy. Put everything on the line for true love.]

He had 10 minutes of fuel left on his Jet Ski when he landed on the Isle of Man.

He is described as a “nice lad, but thick as a brick.”

Meanwhile, Radcliffe [his girlfriend], who has two school-age daughters, is not in trouble with the law but will have to spend Christmas in quarantine because of her boyfriend’s ill-fated voyage.

I think this guy is a bit of a bullshitter to get attention about certain things. There is no way the fuel on a jet ski will last 4 and a half hours. :o

That caught me as a little fishy too. In general, a jet ski can go somewhere from 75-150 miles on a tank of gas. Again, these numbers could vary widely depending on several factors like the jet ski's performance, curb weight, fuel capacity, or the weather conditions. The distance between the Isle of Whithorn and Ramsey is about 25 miles.

Since he had never driven a jet ski before, his inexperience may have played into the length of the journey. He may have spent an hour just trying to get out of the harbor.

Another factor is how honest was the fellow to begin with or did he have a habit of exaggerating.

In looking over the articles:
McLaughlan, of Warrix Avenue in Irvine, was previously given permission to work as a roofer on the island for four weeks in September and, after isolating for 14 days, met his girlfriend on a night out. Later he requested permission to revisit the island and his request was denied.
After he arrived in Ramsey at about 13:00 GMT, he walked another 15 miles (25km) to his girlfriend's home in Douglas, who believed he had been on the island working for several weeks, the court was told. The following afternoon, he gave a police officer her address as his own and that evening, the couple went to two busy nightclubs.

So as far as character:
He illegally made the journey even though he knew it was illegal.
He lied to his girlfriend by implying he had been working on the island for several weeks prior.
He lied to authorities when he gave his girlfriends address as his own.

So it is possible he stretched the truth a little here.

Can he tell the truth though?
Will she get another baby?

He might have never been caught, except:

Before Dale McLaughlan left the U.K. mainland, he filled out a route planner for the coast guard. When he didn't return as scheduled the U.K. authorities alerted search and rescue and filed a missing person's notice to local police forces.

This included the Isle of Man Constabulary who were alerted to the presence of their new arrival. On the evening of Dec. 13, around 16 hours after he'd left the wine bar, McLaughlan was arrested.

THE GIRLFRIEND of the man who was arrested for crossing the Irish Sea on a jet ski says she would marry him if he asked.

Speaking to The Irish Mirror, Jessica said she had received messages of support from people around the world following her boyfriend's act of reckless romance, and said: "People from Ireland have said 'What he did is heroic, you should marry that man.'"

"If he asks me, I'll say yes," she said. "It's definitely a story to tell our grandkids."
