That's not entirely true. Someone who only ever wants to interact online doesn't lose anything by being dishonest, if they're presenting as the character they'd like to be and getting the interactions they appreciate that's probably fulfilling their goals.
Being dishonest is a huge waste of time if you intend on ever meeting, or are at least open to the possibility of meeting.
