Have you ever gone on dates at a bowling alley? Are you good at it?

I’m just about the worst bowler in the world, but when young people in my old church were getting together or courting, we most often went bowling. I hate bowling.

One time I bowled 43. On one of my turns, I accidentally dropped the ball, and it rolled backwards. That counted as my turn. I’m really good at Wii bowling and have gotten perfect games, but real bowling is a different kettle of fish.

It was just a really uncomfortable atmosphere because the guys were trying to show off like it was some sort of weird mating ritual. One of my suitors bowled 48 and looked absolutely miserable. There were some tense moments.

I met and started dating my first serious boyfriend on this occasion. I should’ve stayed home and played video games. Life is full of such regrets.

My son and his GF go bowling every few months. Sometimes a big group of his guy friends go too. It's a place that serves beer, so they Uber there and have a good time. Myself, I've been maybe ten times in my life. I'm terrible at it too. I can only do it with two hands, putting the ball between my legs like a kid. I don't score very well and frankly don't even know how the scoring works. Thank goodness for those automatic scorekeepers. When I was young we had to do it by pencil and I always let others do it for me. I went to a glow-in-the-dark place once and that was fun (same with mini golf).

I wouldn't want to do that on a blind date or a set-up date like you did. Eeek! For one thing even if you liked each other you can't really talk. It's kind of like going to the cinema on a first date. I never understood that one either.

The one we went to didn’t serve any alcohol. Drinking alcohol on such occasions can apparently lead to orgies, I’ve been told.

Apart from the orgy thing, I think alcohol would’ve helped.

Yeah, it was always really loud. Then you’re constantly saying “what?” and it feels super awkward.

Ah, good ole Bowling Orgies! I almost forgot!

The danger of orgies is apparently always present when young people, especially late teens and/or twenty somethings, consume alcohol together.

Those phallic pins, too. How could anyone resist?

The guys would always seem to choose the heaviest balls they could find.

They like to show off their familiarity handling big 'uns. ^

Maybe it was meant to be a sign of virility, suggesting a high sperm count or something.

Do they come with elastics where you bowl?

Some of the lanes had guards but they were never interested in using them. It would make them less manly or something.

(I never got to know any of those individuals in the Biblical sense. The furthest my boyfriend and I got to was kissing and cuddling. )

Yes! Bowling here in Buffalo is very popular and used to be a lot more common since a lot of now-closed churches had bowling alleys in their basement.

I've never bowled.on a date.

I'm not particularly skilled at.it but it is a lot of.fun.

I didn’t know that churches had bowling alleys in their basements. It shouldn’t surprise me.

On the plus side, I’d rather bowl than play a Bible trivia game during these get togethers. I’d always worry that they’d ask a question from the weekly Bible reading, and it would be obvious that I hadn’t read it. I was typically too busy reading something that was actually beneficial, like Lord of the Rings.
