any chance of having a real human relationship?

I have already mentioned on here how I am attracted to Mickey Mouse, SpongeBob SquarePants and Mario but I want to know if this romantic and sexual attraction will get in the way of me finding REAL love?

It's gotten to the point where I am so starved for sex and intimacy that I have been forced to simulate sexual intercourse with my plush of SpongeBob which I fear is going to put my desires of marriage to a complete halt!

The therapist is helping me learn how to find love however I have yet to tell her about SpongeBob SquarePants & other characters because I fear her reaction

My neighbor Anita even said this is hurting my mental health

I can't help but feel that SpongeBob SquarePants is attractive and he & I share things in common

If he was real he would be my soulmate!! !

I am afraid once I finally do find love he won't stand up to SpongeBob, Mickey or Mario

What do you think?

I think it's worth telling your therapist. She is the person least likely to judge you and most likely to be able to give good advice.

There are many things that can make it harder to find love. The only way to know if this is an issue for you is to try and see. Have you been disappointed by potential lovers because they didn't compare to SpongeBob?

You're therapist will more than likely be glad that you have been brave enough to share this bit of information about yourself.

When I talk to my T I treat him like I would any other medical professional. I just think to myself that he will have heard it all before. It makes things much easier that way.

I mean you tell us on here about this so all you have to do is learn to actually verbalise it. Once you've said it it's out there and you can say it again.

I don't think you're so unique in this anyway.

Your therapist might be interested in what it is about this character that you find so attractive. Is it his looks, personality or something else. It's all pretty interesting so you shouldn't feel ashamed or embarrassed.

You are talking about why I am attracted to SpongeBob SquarePants, correct?

I like the character's qualities and his design so I want to find a man in real life who is the living embodiment of SpongeBob

He needs to be sweet, kind, fun, cool & can seamlessly go from childlike to adult

Honestly I would choose fictional characters over real people if I could because they cannot hurt or cheat on you but I want to experience a real wedding as a BRIDE

This is the reason for my dreams about marrying fictional characters

So why would you be scared to talk about this with your therapist. It sound perfectly reasonable to want those things.

I mean I don't know this sponge bob person but he sounds like a catch.

He even lives in a pineapple under the sea.

Lol I know SpongeBob SquarePants is fictional

Hehe he desires marriage too according to the episode "Club SpongeBob" where he asked the magic conch "Will I ever get married?"

Which begs the question:

Why does he have Gary?

Is Gary a replacement for a romantic relationship or is Gary a placeholder until he finds a romantic relationship?

Do you really want someone else, or just feel it's expected of you to be in a relationship with a real person?

Loving Spongebob isn't hurting anyone, I don't see why you can't just love him.

I wonder if the crush developed as a coping strategy perhaps due to loneliness or wanting an escape from your life at the time but knowing that was unobtainable for the foreseeable future. You weren't really allowed to live your own life for you then due to being forced to be your mom's caretaker & her being very demanding & controlling. I developed a mega huge crush obsession on a celeb MANY years ago partly due to loneliness & desperately trying to get a relationship but not having so much as a single date for 8 years straight. Sometimes coping strategies like sever crushes can become very maladaptive & hinder your ability to deal & compensate for the very situations & reasons they started in the 1st place. Think of it as something like an addiction when taken too far. I'm not sure if that's the case or not with you Mikurotorobut but it would be problematic if you really do want a romantic relationship & feel like obsessing about Spongebob is making it harder for you to manage your life & find a good guy. I'm not really sure if mentioning it to your therapist would be helpful or not but if you feel like your therapist somewhat understands you & is helping you with other things, then telling em how extreme the crush is might could be beneficial. There might could be an OCD aspect involved if you have OCD issues with other things in life & if so discussing OCD might could be helpful.

You're lucky you have a therapist and also a neighbor with whom you can talk about this. I've seen a number of people on WP say there are things they don't tell a therapist, like drug use, because they're ashamed. You should definitely discuss it with your therapist as she needs the complete picture.

Unrelated I guess but you may want to consider being open to PMs from guys on WP who are looking for romance (I am 70 so I wouldn't be one of those guys lol). People have actually met on WP and had relationships. Nick is one of those people. Some guys might even be happy just to have a female friend to confide in.

I agree with the others about talking to your therapist about it.

But the armchair psychologist in me wonders if its the consistency of fictional characters that appeals to you?

Characters in fiction tend to be less erratic than real life people because when an established character does something that doesn't fit that character, audiences say "Well that's not something x character would do" and blame bad writing. In real life people do things that are out of character all the time and we just have to accept it which can feel uncomfortable and confusing.

Also, do you watch the same episodes of SpongeBob multiple times? I get a lot of comfort out of doing this and my kid does too. Expecting something to happen and then having it actually happen, every time, can be comforting. But people don't tend to deliver that sort of consistency.

You are correct

SpongeBob is my coping mechanism for not being in a real relationship

The neighbor Anita believes he is in fact hindering my ability to find a good man and that is the reason she told me to see a therapist

She wants me to hurry up & find a partner otherwise this will just continue!

I looked it up and I do match up with maladaptive daydreaming which must be why Anita told me to talk to a therapist

Shouldn't be a problem as long as you accept the fact that no real-life human will be an exact replica of these fictional characters.

Indeed, your fondness for these fictional characters might even help you find a real-life partner, if you seek out friends and potential partners who are fans of the same characters you are.

If you have not done so already, I would suggest that you get involved in organized fan clubs for these characters and try to make friends there. Eventually you might meet a good potential partner.

Yes, especially when you consider that "porn stars" are usually idealized and fictionalized caricatures of themselves, and that obsessively craving porn to the exclusion of real, meaningful relationships can and will destroy marriages.

Fantasy obsessions can destroy relationships and make new relationships difficult or impossible to achieve.

I think your neighbor is setting unrealistic expectations, and I can say from experience that getting into a relationship as soon as possible won't fix things.

Also, real men aren't as cool as SpongeBob or Mario. Maybe Mickey but I was never really a fan anyway. Don't set yourself up for disappointment.

I won't go so far as to say what your sexuality is but the fact that your attraction to these characters is a normal childhood bond/their strong personalities rather than their physical features sounds like demisexuality, which means you feel sexual attraction only after an emotional connection. Unfortunately, I don't have any further advice then not rushing into/worrying things (life is a lot more then love and sex, even if it really feels like the culture emphasizes it) and, er...make sure you wash SpongeBob every now and then. He may be absorbent and yellow buuuut...
