Given the popularity of my thread on bowling (viewtopic.php?f=6&t=414500), I feel like we need to talk about roller skating.
Who has gone on a date at a roller skating rink? Please tell us about it.
Who has blamed falling on the person speeding past them?
Who has slow skated to Aerosmith’s “I Don’t Wanna Miss a Thing?”
I never went on a date at a roller skating rink. I did win the limbo once when I was a kid. (That biotch who could do splits on skates and won every time lost due to an uncharacteristic fall. Ha! The victory was mine!)
Roller skating is in my blood. My grandmother, who would be 105 if she were still alive, got married at a roller skating rink. I’m just like her, except for being roughly half as attractive and half as intelligent as she was. You get the idea.
We both made comparably sh***y choices when it came to husbands. I think she was on the spectrum, too.

That's really cool about your grandmother! ^
Rollerskating: When I was about ten my parents were at a football party (Grey Cup) getting drunk with other parents, so my auntie rounded up all the kids and dumped us at the roller rink. I was terrified. I fell in love with it anyway because you know me and music, and me and coloured light, and me and .... having an excuse not to have to talk to people as I skated. I got the hang of it pretty quickly and kept going back for four hours every weekend for a few years, with one friend from school. Eventually I had my own skates with handmade pompoms on them. I thought I was pretty hot.
Dates: Nope. I don't think I had dates, because I was too young. I went when I was maybe 10-12 or 13. I was always in love with some boy or other though. I spent many a time bawling my eyes out during the slow songs, especially for that foster boy Sean I mentioned in the breakup thread. One time I was so upset I was lying on the bathroom floor in my skates convulsing because he was moving away. Yeah, I'm not dramatic at all when I'm in love when I'm 13. The song playing was Goodbye to Romance by Ozzy.
I don't recall falling but I might have. I held the wall a lot when I was first learning.
Popular skating songs from then:
Goodbye to Romance (Ozzy) Raise a Little Hell (Trooper) Magic Power (Triumph) --- I used to think I was such hot shite with this one -- I'd go really fast and twirl You Shook Me All Night Long (AC/DC) -- Uh, same. ^ Another One Bites the Dust - QUEEN Heart of Glass - Blondie
Creepy Memory: When I was about 12 there was a dude about 19 or 20 working at the skate rental desk. Something weird happened in terms of him hitting on me and trying to ... do something to me where no one could see us. I don't remember much about it but his name was Manuel and I was really uncomfortable.

I used to hang out at the rinks back in the day, everyone did. Our small town had 3 of them. I had a pair of speed skates, black with yellow wheels and stripes. I was cool city, man. We would cover ourselves with highlighter because it glowed under the backlights. It was one of the best times but also the absolute worst because a lot of sh***y stuff went on at the time.

I don't know that highlighter trick. Interesting!
Yup, I agree. It was the best of times and the worst of times.
My son and his friends went through a phase of going to the same rink when they were in high school. He was always a good skater because he played ice hockey.
I get the feeling there were quite a few hookups (kissing) happening there for him.

Tell me this isn't the best rollerskating song for 13 year old depressed divas like me. Just add red lights and skin tight Cote d'Azur jeans that needed to be zipped using a coat hanger. Oh, and feather earrings. And feathered hair. And purple eyeshadow.
What a rocker I was.
DRAMATIC INTRO
Something's at the edge of your mind You don't know what it is Something you were hoping to find But you're not sure what it is Then you hear the music And it all comes crystal clear The music does the talking Says the things you want to hear I'm young, I'm wild and I'm free Got the magic power of the music in me I'm young, I'm wild and I'm free Got the magic power of the music in me
She climbs into bed She pulls the covers overhead And she turns her little radio on She's had a rotten day So she hopes the DJ's Gonna play her favorite song Makes her feel much better Brings her closer to her dreams A little magic power Makes it better that it seems
She's young now, she's wild now, she wants to be free She gets the magic power of the music from me She's young now, she's wild now, she wants to be free She gets the magic power of the music from me
ANGST BUILDS
You're thinking it over But you just can't sort it out Do you want someone to tell you What they think it's all about Are you the one and only Who's sad and lonely? You're reaching for the top Well, the music keeps you going And it's never gonna stop It's never gonna stop It's never gonna, never gonna, never gonna, never gonna stop
Dig the crescendo!! GO ISSY GO!!
The world is full of compromise And infinite red tape But the music's got the magic It's your one chance for escape Turn me on, and turn me up It's your turn to dream A little magic power Makes it better than it seems
OMG!! GO! GO! GO! GIRL!
I'm young now, I'm wild now, I want to be free Got the magic power of the music in me I'm young now, I'm wild and I'm free Got the magic power of the music
I got the music in me I got the power I got the magic She's got the power She's got the magic She's got the power She's got the magic She's got the power She's got the magic

I usually went with my best friend. Once we went to a rink in NC and decided to skate together during a slow song because we didn’t want to stop skating. One of the staff made us stop because slow skates were for male/female couples only.
