How would they know they were homosexual if they were the only man and woman?

By definition neither of them could be gay because no one of the same sex exists in this scenario. Unless you're counting Neanderthals and such. Say, the first Homosapiens end up in gay relationships with Neanderthals. Is that where this is going?
If so, it would be a question as to why that happened. Did we evolve differently? Some animals reproduce asexually. There is a type of lizard, all female, that produce asexually. Naturally their offspring is female.
Humans reproduce sexually as we have a greater need for genetic diversity. 'What if we evolved differently and took an asexual approach to reproduction?' would be an interesting question. I suppose if that happened, we'd likely be a single sex animal.
Unless we were sexually fluid like some animals. Clownfish, for example, have been known to physically change sex depending on environment. They adapt. Males will become female if there is a need for a female.
Now that's an interesting question - 'what if humans had evolved to be sexually fluid instead?'
I actually read a comic with that premise once. In this world, humans had developed to be sexually fluid and were able to shapeshift at will. In that case, I suppose they could reproduce in a male / female state and then potentially change to male / male or female / female. However, would it be something they could control or would it be something that happens due to physiological reasons outside of their control?
