The topic title basically says it all...
My NT brother bites his girlfriend to show affection, and she bites him back. They can't explain why they do this it's "Just fun" they say.

Is it some primal thing I wonder... my cats sometimes bite me out of affection. but they are cats, they have an excuse.

Anyone knows (or have a theory)? Or perhaps you have witnessed other unusual ways of showing affection?

I don't think that what you're referring to are actual 'love bites,' least not as I understand them. I always thought a love bite and a hickey where the same thing, but I could be wrong.

As for as actual biting, I'm all for it. A bit of pain in the bedroom is good. Spanking, scratching, biting. I love it. Not so much in public, although I have bitten my friends in jest occasionally.

Hmm. I enjoy being savagely bitten ( WITH FULL COMPLEMENT OF TEETH; HARD) on the nape of the neck. This is definitely NOT a "hickie", which technically involves suction, hence the mottled bruised appearance ( I once gave an Army boyfriend of mine one when he was on leave; he was dinged for " DESTRUCTION OF GOVERNMENT PROPERTY " when he went back, which I thought was delightfully whimsical, albeit possessive, of our Armed FORCES---the Other Woman.) I digress...the nape of the neck is absolutely ripe for violent dental possession! It's some bestial holdover, but then isn't every good and wonderful thing? 8)

here in England we call hickeys lovebites. It's not always biting- it can be sucking (at the neck or wherever) that make the marks but because the skin is so sensitive it doesn't take much and a little nip can also do it. It just happens when you get carried away with all the passion!

It always confused me too.

Some people are sensitive and bruise really easily around the neck, because there are lots of little veins there.

What I don't get is people who do it on purpose. I guess it is like tagging/branding someone. I think it would annoy me if someone did it to me without consent. I remember once on a night out standing by a a taxi rank, there was a guy trying to talk on the phone while this girl trying to suck hard on his neck. He didn't seem to pleased about it.

I can understand it happening by accident because it sensual precisely because it is sensitive there.

I don't consider biting a form of affection.

Sounds painful, not affectionate, to me. But you know what they say: Different strokes for different folks.

It's not painful at all: the "bruise" (it's not actually a bruise: it looks like one, but it doesn't hurt) is normally made by suction rather than biting. But it's still a personal choice, I guess. I don't normally leave lovebites on my boyfriend, but he's more than happy to leave them on me (he put one on my chin once as a joke, but I wasn't amused because we were at his parents house).
