Because conservative Christianity tends to repel anyone that is not of that subset, including the greater Christian community.
Which is not to say that one has to give up belief in Jesus... there are, in fact, more mainstream christians than conservative ones, whereas at the same time one will become more attractive to many others and gain the respect of many more merely because you're not being as much of a prick. I cite Ragtime as a primary example...
F' that. If someone sells themselves and their principles out - what do they have left? Even if it gets 'results' its hardly worthwhile.
You don't have to sell your principles out. I still consider myself a follower of Christ, believe that He is my personal Lord and Savior, follow the 10 commandments, etc etc. I just don't shove my faith down other people's throats (unless others try to do that to me; then it's open season). I believe more in being a good person as the way to worship the Lord rather than yelling at others for not doing so... it's like "taking the great plank out of your own eye before taking the speck of dust out of your neighbor's"...

I have to inject here that a good Catholic Italian girl can be strict enough to please any self-mortifying, saint-worshipping, crucifix-in-every-room Evangelical. If that's what you want, you need to stop worshipping at the Corner Baptist Church and to go Saint Michael's Catholic Church down the street. Don't forget to show up for early morning daily mass so you get the real diligent ones!
Evangelical protestants and evangelical catholics don't get along that well... there's enough theological differences to re-ignite the Thirty-years war if you put enough evangelicals of both Catholic and Protestant persuasion in one room and lock the door...
