Pick up lines are stupid. Your best option is to go with 'hello'.

Is that a monster-in-my-pocket in your pocket, or are you just happy to see me?

Nice elbows, what time do they open?

Is that a broken mirror in your pants? ...because I think I can see a crack.

Hey, does this leaf smell like chlorophyll?

If I hold your body against me, would you say I was beautiful?

Do you wash your pants with Windex? Because I think I can see my reflection in them

i'd walk up to them and ask how they'd try to open up a conversation with someone they we're interested in in a situaton like this.

Tres smooooth. I like it. Wish I had thought of it about 20yrs ago, but insulting her intelligence on our first meeting and staring with my jaw open the second time seemed to work with my wife so I can't complain.

Don't know about in Australia, but in the US most of the students are from out of town so a common conversation starter was "So, where are you from?" Strangely enough one time the response was "Australia".

I think there are two types of pickup lines: "real" and "meta." The real ones are sincere compliments and are pretty much only effective when the other person already has an existing attraction to you; the other ones I call "meta" because the important part isn't the content of the line, but the fact that you're willing to make a total fool of yourself by saying such a corny, dumb thing to her just to get her attention. This combines a sense of humor, willingness not to take yourself too seriously, and an expression of interest that collectively work very well together.

Another type of "meta" line is when a person makes an insult or feigns apathy or even disdain. Some women feel challenged by this -- why doesn't this guy like them? -- and feel the need to confirm their attractiveness by winning the man's affection. This also seems to be pretty effective, but I wouldn't want to try it because I'd consider it unethical.

Well, plus I'm not exactly casanova at the bars, either. :)

I was in Toronto this weekend so I tried out a couple things.

First, I was on a train, and there were only three of us there. There was this girl that was quietly singing during the whole ride...and I must say honestly, she was quite something, both in her voice, and her looks. So as the train reached the end of the line at Union Station where both of us would get off, I went up to her and asked if she was professional. I told her she sounded like the girls singing in a certain television ad that is on right now. She told me she was flattered, and then I asked her how to get to the TTC subway, as I hadn't been in Toronto in awhile. She was heading there too, so she let me follow her. All the way from the train to the TTC station we chatted about university and so forth. When we got to the TTC station, I stopped to buy tickets, and she WAITED for me! She was getting on the Downsview train while I was getting on the Finch, so we had to depart...neither of us told each other our names, and I didn't ask for a number. I didn't see it as a good idea since we didn't chat for long enough. Had I been getting on the Downsview, we could've kept chatting and something could've developed. Now only if I had a reason to go on the Downsview...

Second...also in the Toronto area, I was in a mall where I spotted two girls a bit younger than me looking at themselves in a mirror behind an escalator. Both of them were wearing these tight, revealing blue tank tops with white T-shirts underneath, and they were holding the T-shirts up and looking at their bare figures in the mirror. They were sexy, to say the least. So I say to them, "Looking good, keep it up!" I had them laughing quite hard. I should've stayed there instead of moving on.

So, my advice would be to look for something quirky that you see someone doing, whether it's singing on a train or looking at their figures in a mirror in the middle of a mall. And exploit it!
