I know it's a bit late in the day but I'm still very hurt: why would someone who I think of as a BF (we've done more than handholding, put it that way) not return a 'merry xmas' greeting and only SMS Happy New Year back (I sent mine dead on midnight) 5 days later, and only on prompting. Why???

He's AS and I don't know if I am or not though we share a few similarities in behaviour - but this one I don't understand. He does say he wants to meet up 'soon' etc (he's a bit solitary) but he often doesn't respond to SMSs unless I catch him on the right day or ask him if he's cross with me or wants me to give up (when the answer usually comes back as a 'No').

Personally i find new years greetings and that whole ritual stupid and unnecessary. But if it will make you feel better, Happy new year. ^_^ *bites you*

I feel the same way.

It's like I like certain people, and I think saying "Happy new year" is one of the nicest things you could ever say to a person, but sometimes, people are so busy that they just don't have time for you.

In my case, my thought process is thinking that they have fallen off the face of the earth. I feel like I am saying "Happy new year," and they are saying, "Sad new year" back to me. It's not that they don't care about me, they just don't feel the platonic love that I feel for them because I appreciate them as people.

Thank you both, that's useful to know & makes me feel a lot better. Jason, when you say that you're "thinking that they have fallen off the face of the earth" do you mean that you simply forget about them?

No, I mean the reverse situation, that they have actually forgotten about you. You are welcome for the advice, though.
