Okay, does anyone find this annoying with online friends?

Yeah, probably.

Here's a thought I've just woken up with.

It has been difficult for me at all stages of my life to make friends who are anything like a good influence. Making friends has not been that hard. Making friends who are not in some way, and often subtly, a bad influence has been difficult. Friends who are a good, positive influence on each other and are stable people, are in stable social groups.

Much the same thing applies online. The online friends you can make are like the ones I describe in real life, so they are likely not to be the most stable friends to have or, indeed, the most stable people.

This annoys me occasionally when it happens, but usually I'm understanding about it if I didn't ask them any sort of important question.

I occasionally take a long time to respond to people as well, partly because I put several tabs up while I have MSN running and forget to check it, or I will sometimes do this thing where I will read the question that I was asked and then imagine myself answering it and believe that I had actually done so.

What really annoys me is when people excessively say "mmhmm" (and varients) or when they use excessive periods ".........."

From being a long time user and moderator of online forums, I've come to interpret both "mmhmm" and excessive periods as an indication of coldness. I realize that some people don't know this and just say things like, "And you're doing......" in a completely innocent way, but it always makes me double check whether or not I'm doing something to offend the other person, which leads to a very dry conversation.

It happens to me often and I dont mind at all for three reasons:

1) While on MSN, iChat or whatever I'm also on the net posting on here, doing research on my obsession, etc. so it's actually more convenient
2) It would be hypocritical for me to get annoyed because I do it sometimes, too
3) Sometimes I, and others, too, need time to think of what to say

That annoys me sometimes as well. In the past when I've spoken to certain people and I ask questions and try to make a decent conversation most of the time they only say "Lol" and "yeah" but then they don't say anything else. I don't mind it if there just isn't much to talk about though.
I don't mind if people sometimes take their time answering. I do other stuff online as well so I might take a little while to reply. It would annoy me though if they specifically asked to speak with me about something.

I am also guilty of delaying answers... not intentionally though but I have no IM notification and have ADOS (attention deficite... oh, shiny!) I do feel bad about it but can not curb the habit...

I'm sure that people have a reason for doing that.

This. Since having it happen to me so many times and doing it as well, I've accepted that it happens and take it lightly.

I just don't want people IMing me when they are busy. I don't want them IMing me if they have to get off in a few minutes. That's what's annoying.

It doesn't make any sense to do it. I don't do it so why do they?

Sure if they started IMing me and then something unexpected came up and they had to leave five minutes later, that's different but some people do that to me all the time, not once in a while. Something unexpected can't possibly come up every time they do it. I finally talked to them about it. One of them stays on for a half hour to an hour which is good.

I have trouble keeping up with more than 2 conversations at once, so I get overwhelmed in a chat room situation when I'm trying to participate in the room, and then a bunch of people start IMing me. It's not that I'm not interested in meeting them. It's just that I like when people give me their mostly undivided attention, so I feel bad when I can't give them mine. It's why I haven't been in the #WP chatroom in awhile. I can't keep up!

Maybe I'm just getting old...? LOL!
