Well, I think its anything that lets you read a book on it like phones and kindles that display ebooks. If I read a real book in a boring social situation, everyone is offended at the rudeness, but with e-reader, everyone thinks it is serious work business on your phone.

I won't use those; ironically, because I don't want to put someone out of a job and also because I do not want to be spoken down to by a machine. Doesn't mean I especially like talking to people though.

They don't put people out of jobs, they just don't get an opportunity to get one. I don't know about in the UK, but all the stores I've seen here add the self-checkouts in addition to the regular cash registers, not replacing them and firing people.

All i see are frantic people with cards to reset the things because they freeze up and beep realy loudly when you put something in the wrong place.

I think it's probably a bit of both. In fact they usually end up having to help people anyway because they keep beeping. Wouldn't it be easier just to have a manned till in the first place rather than someone standing there? Bonkers.

I agree. I tried them when they first came out and I just got frustrated.

Whenever I'm in a store with them now, I walk right on past them to a register with a person.

I was a cashier for 2 years at Toys R Us. I'd rather someone else do it for me.
