I'm living on my own, but Aspie style. I work from home providing geek services remotely, and get work via email. So my social skills, eccentricities, and sensory issues never come up. Through a combination of a lot of dumb luck and the stubborn, obsessive pursuit that Aspies are known for, I created a workable lifestyle. But it is not understood or accepted by the NTs I know.
That doesn't matter to me. I never understood why people care about the things they do. I didn't know what a GPA was in high school until some grabbed my report card from my hand, and to his horror discovered mine was above his (he had assumed otherwise). I didn't understand college majors or the concept of a career, and relationships are still beyond my understanding, though I did have a few before realizing I was too inept to succeed in that area.
The one way AS is getting worse for me is that I am falling further behind socially and in other ways compared to age-equivalent NTs. But I enjoy mostly manage to enjoy my life, though I know it does not resemble what most others (NTs that is) would call a life.
