Wow!
I knew that people tend to like to eat with other people (which I always found sort of odd), but I had no idea there were such rigid social expectations built around meals.
I don't even have a kitchen/dining table at home--I eat standing at the kitchen counter. When I still had an office job, I ate alone at my desk. I love food and cooking, but don't feel any need to share the experience with others.
I guess I'm just a food miser.
That someone would take offense to a invitation declined without an "excuse" never even crossed my mind, but now I'm starting to remember some things...
