I think that this a pretty common phenomenom. A Facebook friends list is like any collection that you have. Sometimes you acquire and other times you cast away.

I look at it like going through my closet. You can't bring yourself to get rid of certain things, but evdentually you move on. The Facebook friends list is the same way.

I feel more comfortable with IM friend lists where I don't necessarily have to know if I've been removed, as I can't see. In the case of MSN, you can check who has added you to their list but I never look at that.

I tend to delete people who don't seem to want to be my friend anymore. If I post on their wall on FB and they consistently fail to reply or even say hi, the hell with them. Though these days I'm a little more stable emotionally and don't care as much.
