Honda's and Toyota's are both good cars and each have life long, loyal owners. I've owned both,I'd give the edge to Honda's if you twisted my arm. Any car maker can have recall issues, Toyota has been unfairly beaten up recently in my opinion.I've owned a Hyundai for last 7 years and it's been problem free.

A new car is the way to go if you can afford it , but a low mileage, late model car is the best deal. Please feel free to contact me if you need some moral support or have any other questions.

Thanks, guys, for the advice. That's helpful and I appreciate it.

I'm seeing people saying good things about Toyotas ... is that just for certain model years? I was considering a '10 Corolla, but am really concerned about all the recalls ...

They're good no matter the year. If you're referring to the acceleration issues from 2009, then they were actually found to be driver error.

CNN wrote:
The word of the rocket scientists apparently wasn't good enough. The Washington safety lobby wants more proof that Toyotas are free from electronic gremlins...Meanwhile, Claybrook, a former National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) administrator who later led the consumer group Public Citizen, complained that NASA hadn't tried hard enough. "I think they could have done a lot more in terms of gathering expertise."

Done more? NASA engineers analyzed more than 280,000 lines of software code for bugs, rigorously examined mechanical components, and bombarded vehicles with electromechanical radiation.

Its conclusion was unequivocal. "NASA found no evidence that a malfunction in electronics caused large intended acceleration," said Michael Kirsch, principal engineer at NASA's engineering and safety center...So Congress asked NASA to find out if electronic gremlins were to blame. And it found no evidence of a failure in either Toyota's Electronic Throttle Control System or its brake system. That reinforced the longtime suspicions among some that driver error was at fault.

Believe it or not, the issue was caused from people stacking all-weather mats on top of the original mats the cars came with. All Toyota ended up doing was shortening the accelerator pedals.

Still, if makes me nervous to think about future recalls with possible issues they haven't discovered yet.

Also - EVERY company has recalls sometimes. Toyota is one of the companies that's had a relatively low amount of them.

Thanks again, guys. As of yesterday morning, I'm the proud owner of a new '10 Corolla and was able to get a fairly good deal on it. (Ended up paying over $3,000 below MSRP for it and also a bit below the KBB value for a used '10 Corolla with about 12,000 miles on it, which makes me feel better about deciding to purchase a new car, given depreciation and whatnot). So far, I feel good about my decision and I'm hoping it stays that way!

Cool.

Did your salesperson leave you comfortable all the way through?

He didn't make me uncomfortable, but I did sort of wonder if I made him uncomfortable.

I've been told that when I just act naturally (ie. don't make a conscious effort to make eye contact, use appropriate facial expressions and tone of voice, etc.), I can be hard to read. And, since I didn't want to seem too excited about the car, I didn't make any effort to be expressive.

Since I acted like Little Miss Deadpan, I don't think he was able to get a feel for where I was at and that was probably a good thing, in hindsight.

Yeah, being able to not show any emotion is good when you're doing stuff like this. And have you thought about taking up Poker? ;)

Congrats on the car! :)

Yes. You were there looking for a car, not a man!

Well done! Blueroses. You've made us all proud, and you should be proud of yourself. What color is it?

You know, the few times I've played Poker, I've actually done really well. :)

Thanks. It's blue. I'm not a big fan of the color blue and would have preferred red or black, but it was the only base model they had and that was what I wanted/was willing to pay for. Color's not really important to me, anyhow, though.

I went into a dealership with 11,000 dollars, except I told them I had 8,000 dollars and that I wanted a Corrola. I got a Corrola for 8,000 dollars. How interesting. Best part is, the listed price was about 10,000...and I didn't have to haggle. Salesmen at car dealerships need a quota, so use it to your advantage.

where i live, out in the sticks, a bicycle is about as useful for us sticks-dwellers, as it would be for a fish.
