The only thing I'll ever touch is pot.. I dont even touch cigarettes. It can get pretty pricey if you smoke too often and move onto better grade weed but you'd need to smoke multiple times every day for 6+ months for that to happen, lmao. Other than that, weed is very affordable and doesnt "corrupt" you at all.. then again, weed doesnt really qualify as a drug.
Only downside for me is I have asthma, making me more predisposed to a "smokers cough" but once I'm able to buy it buy the oz I can make brownies, sandwiches, and sauces with it

I was addicted to cocaine for a bit and often did tons of other stuff. For a while the high is a nice escape but not worth almost dying, lol.

Drugs are a great way to enjoy being mediocre.
They help people mask their problems instead of helping them deal with them.
The sad part is that many people don't realize what a trap it is until too late and they're physically addicted. Stay away from that! Push yourself into something constructive instead.

I should add that I've tried many different drugs and count myself EXTREMELY lucky that it just didn't appeal to me. My sister wasn't as lucky.

i don't understand when people say weed isn't a drug. i was always under the impression that anything altering your state of consciousness was exactly that.

please be careful slasher666. drug withdrawals/comedowns can be extremely painful on many levels to yourself and others - they can also be dangerous. i would know this.... i know you're talking about light(er) drugs, but i'll say it anyway. be really careful. coming down off ecstasy is manageable for me, but not everyone would agree. i'll admit that i've felt myself and my memory drifting away, it's eerie

I'm fairly open to people I know about how much I like pot (a little too much sometimes  ), but I have zero desire to try any harder drugs. As for the peer pressure debate, I started smoking pot purely on my own accord (in high school, my best friend and I got some crappy shake, made a pipe out of a toilet paper roll, and the rest is history), and the vast majority of people I know that partake were never subjected to peer pressure. Peer pressure does exist, its prevalence is pretty overstated (gotta love those fear-mongering after-school specials and anti-drug commercials).

Do I want to smoke every day? No, I lose mental sharpness after 3-4 days straight. Do I want to smoke alone? Hell no, that's pretty much the only thing keeping me from being a full-blown stoner  . Rather, I use it as a fun, social way to decompress after a hard day. I'd take a few bowls, a couple buddies, and an Xbox over most possible ways to spend a Friday/Saturday night.

[Sigh] It disappoints me that so many people see drugs as being okay. I'm kind of weird in that I was raised in a liberal, non-religious household and hold those views myself, but am probably the biggest prude to ever exist (next to my Mom). At the age of 6 I was told what drugs are and that they are very bad (it came up from watching a Star Trek episode, actually--I was a nerdy child). Then when I was 10 there was a program at school where a police officer would come in and talk to us every so often about how bad drugs are for you and how to say no to them. So that message has been so ingrained in me that I have a feeling of complete repulsion at the idea of someone using them. Not to mention: they are illegal! I believe in following the law. Therefore, I don't approve of illicit drug use.

Smoking I think is disgusting (I've never tried it but the smell is bad enough) and should be illegal. But it's not illegal so I don't have as big a problem with it. But it is disgusting.

I took legal drugs for a time, and I don't regret it.

I wasn't stupid; I wasn't under 'any pressure' (hell, the fact that I had been alone for so long was a probably a trigger in itself) and it certainly wasn't because of all the cool, crazy clubs I was going to ( I wish!)

It sounds really stupid and clinical now, reciting it to myself, but I researched everything about these drugs I had-- what was in them, what they did...I took my vitamin C, ate soup and drank a lot of water. I lost about ten pounds in two weeks. I won't say it was a bad experience, because I enjoyed the time I was on them--but the hallucinations became too much, and it was a simple case of saying 'no more'. It's definetly put me off the 'illegal' stuff though, for sure.

I'm not sure if I'm an aspie or not but have been thinking it's a strong possibility. Cigarettes for me were *incredibly* addictive, and my advice is to never smoke cigarettes if you don't already. Cigarettes are also widely known to be more addictive than many illicit drugs - e.g heroin addicts etc can give up heroin but can't give up cigarettes.

For me I smoked cigarettes for a number of reasons:
1. Curiosity
2. Self-medication - Anxiety relief, especially during 'social' times when I needed an outlet.
3. I actually always liked the smell of tobacco
4. Chance to interact with a group of people where I don't look like a space alien
5. Opportunity to interact and start conversations with girls that smoked (e.g Hi do you have a light? :) )

But now I strongly wish I didn't. After getting used to them, the positive effects were alot less, and I get strong urges to have one until it drives me crazy if i try and stop.

As for recreational illicit drug use - for a philosophical analogy it's like playing a computer game with cheats. It may be fun, and it gets you to the end state that you want, but you miss out on the experience that would normally get you there without 'cheating'. You're supposed to get highs because you do something fulfilling and enjoyable in life, not because you took a drug.

I would also recommend NEVER associating with people who peer pressure you into using any substance. These aren't peers that are worth having as friends or aquaintances, and would probably never consider you a friend in the first place. I never had trouble with illicit drugs, as they're illegal and that was a turn-off from me doing them. I also knew I'd have major issues sourcing any, as I'd never trust anyone not to rip me off or anything like that, and people who supply them tend to be unpleasent characters.

I've previously heard of aspies and socially awkward people self-medicating with various forms of amphetamine and especially MDMA (ecstacy). Is there any truth to this from someone with experience?

I agree with slasher666, those kind of drugs are okay. They aren't really bad for your health and it's not really addictive. And those kinds really get into your creative side, I imagine, just look at the sixties and seventies. The ones that are huge nonos are things like herion, meth, and crack\cocaine. Even cigarettes and alchohol get bad at a point.

.......I'm thinking less people are gonna like me now...

seems as though your opinions are very strongly influenced by other people. that's definitely where we differ... i opt to follow my own set of morals and ethics and needs as best i can, rather than doing or not doing something because it is "legal" or "illegal"

Everyone's morals are influenced by other people. No matter how hard you try you can't escape that, not really.

I also take a more practical view (which comes to the same conclusions, making me think it may be a mere rationale for my gut-reactions). Drugs can very easily have negative impacts on health. That is bad. Also, they can be part of what causes poverty or prevents people from making useful contributions to society. I believe that everyone should try to make some sort of contribution to society, so something which inhibits doing so is bad.

Breathing air has negative impacts on health, because of all the potentially harmful particles floating around...so is breathing bad? Also drugs hardly cause poverty.......there are many sucessful people who use drugs and many unsucessful people who use drugs. Personally, I think the way economic systems are set up, mental illnesses and not fitting into society have more to do with poverty then drugs. I have not contributed to society because for most of my childhood I was left out of most social interactions, I can't keep a job for more then a couple months if even that due to severe depression, and my problems with social interaction caused by aspergers..so yeah I have not been in a position to contribute anything.....but not because of drugs, I had these problems before I ever did drugs. What people tend not to realise is its not that perfectly stable, mentally healthy people start doing drugs and their lives go downhill because of it. Its more like people that already have problems or are unsucessful, use drugs because its hard to deal with.....and sometimes lose control with drug use.

As I say, those are probably mere rationales. Because of my upbringing I have been practically brain-washed against drug use. It must be how people brought up in a highly religious household feel.

Also, the breathing analogy is a poor one. If you don't breathe, you die. Breathing can have negative health impacts, but fewer than caused by not breathing (aka: death). If you take recreational drugs you risk your health. If you don't take recreational drugs you do not risk your health (in that way).

Well obviously the only way to avoid any risks associated with drugs is not to do drugs, however whats to say the health risks always outweigh the benifits? I mean even prescription drugs can have negative side effects.......also do you drink coffee or soda? if you do then you are not totally against drugs because caffine is a drug.

also i don't wanna get super personal, but whats wrong with thinking for ones self rather then just sticking to what you're told? seems thats a common attitude people have towards drugs instead of seeking out information themselves they just believe whatever the anti-drug propaganda says.

"bad"? what do you mean by that exactly AstroGeek? you must be speaking from sort of objective perspective, because you have no experience with drugs. i toss objectivity out the door when it directly interferes with my personal freedom

right now there are people who have power over my life, yet do not really understand... weed is at least an escape for me. relief. peace. as strange as it might sound, right now..that is "good".

I think Astro is meaning hard drugs, not weed. And drugs aren't necessarily the reason some people become uncontributing to society. Personal troubles already do that, sometimes making the gateway to drug using, it just makes you fall out of your troubles but replaces it for new ones.

weed is not the only un-hard drug.....but thats hardly my concern anymore, the issue I see is people blindly believing what they are told without investigateing for themselves. especially when it concerns drugs of any kind.
