I'd say I have a couple of close friends. A few work friends as well that I can hang out with.

But people use the words "friend" and "acquaintance" a little too interchangeably for my taste. I suppose it helps that "friend" has fewer syllables, and is thus easier to pronounce in casual conversations. Facebook is delusive. Nobody has hundreds of friends.

If you call someone up on a Sunday morning to help you move the contents of your house, and they show up (geography permitting), then that's a pretty damn good friend. Everyone else is in the take-it-or-leave-it pile.
