i don't like or understand the whole tipping thing. People should just get paid what they deserve to get paid, and not have their income dependent on the goodwill or social know-how of the customers. I can't do math in my head, so i usually just tip 1-2 dollars, no matter what the price of the food is. Its the same service anyway.

They tell you "it'll be $12" so I just pay that. And pizzas are way overpriced...

The whole tipping thing bugs me. I now remember to tip in sit-down restaurants (after many embarassing incidents where people reminded me) and I don't calculate it, it takes too long... just add on in whole dollar amounts. But pretty much everywhere else, I let it slide. I either forget about it (like usually with Pizza delivery), or don't realize it's expected, or I think it's overpriced. Like espresso stands... they almost always have a tip jar and I never tip them. The coffee already costs 3-4 dollars a cup! The restaurants that add the tip to the bill automatically in addition to the stated price bug me too. What if they didn't deserve that much?
I have a friend who tips everybody exorbitantly... coffee places, drivers, the people who put your suitcase on the cart in the hotel (they aren't really doing much). He always knows right when to do it, and always goes way over the expected amount of money. It's really generous and the people are always happy and grateful... but on my own I never know when it's expected and I can't afford it anyway. Why don't they just have a stated price?
Sorry about the rant :P

Tipping is a good idea but you shoudn't be expected to magically know something when no one has said anything about it.

Similar to what Donkey said,

In Australia we don't tip for deliveries. But if its the custom in the US, make a habit of tipping, offering visitors a drink (water, coffee, beer or whatever) etc etc. Its all about manners.

Tipping is optional, therefore it is a choice..
