Basically, these "rules" for socializing are based on deceit. Everyone has flaws, but most people are afraid of them, afraid their flaws will keep them from what they want. So they lie, or bend or omit the truth. It's only logical that this would lead to problems (i.e. a 50%+ divorce rate), but unfortunately common sense is pretty rare.
So, how would I fix things? Honesty!
