You weren't being sarcastic but by sheer bad luck you chose a phrase that is primarily used for sarcasm.
There is a way around this problem. Listen to the conversations of your classmates and you will hear certain phrases used frequently to be snarky, sarcastic or obnoxious. Then
don't use those phrases unless you fully intend to be sarcastic.
The phrases that teens use to be sarcastic are often phrases that have a plausible non-sarcastic use also. So it is likely that you will land on one of them by random chance (as you did) unless you are aware that they have the sarcastic meaning. Once a phrase is adopted for sarcastic use by many people, it often gets dropped from straightforward use and from that time on it is used only sarcastically. This is why it so important ti listen to the conversations of others. It's the only way you will find out which phrases are used primarily for sarcasm even when they could theoretically be used non-sarcastically.
