Yes, I definitely know what you mean, I think if you have as, people assume you are normal sometimes but just a bit weird.

That Said, like some people have mentioned I do prefer that it is not as easily noticeable. Also some people who know I have it have said that they would not have guessed as it is not as noticeable as some other people they have met with it (which i think is because I work hard to hide it and fit in)

I also do not class as as a disability and do not generally feel disabled (although I am sure you will all disagree with me). Maybe it's because I have an issue with the word disability, due to the negative connotations associated with the term. I prefer the term difference.

I also prefer the term difference. While that difference may be disabling for some, it is not disabling for all due to differences in degree and maybe even differences in family response and how those differences that do not work so well with other types of people are managed.

I know to recognize being on edge and go home. I also have practiced for many years, expressing my near meltdown issues with scripts. Mostly though, I am able to go home and eliminate the overloading.

I have also learned what diet works best to keep me feeling solid and able to manage those sensitivities I cannot avoid.

Mostly though, I learned where I have sensitivities and take action to care for myself even when it makes me feel guilty for doing it. Example: my socks, the ones that feel best on my feet cost $20 a pair! This makes me feel guilty because that is out of the family budget so I know someone else had to take less to cover my need. So I work to feel less guilty by hand washing and line drying those socks so they last as long as possible. Those socks make the difference between my driving happily in spite of many bad drivers on the roads and my reacting to those bad drivers by becoming more and more anxious until I have to go home and cannot finish the errands without crying.

It is why I can do internet at home, but not creative writing which I do best at a table in a coffee shop full of frantically studying students. I cannot filter, but the coffee shop sounds blur together and act like a screen of sound blocking individual sounds which I cannot block. Here, I hear my children and my brain will not ignore them even though I know their Dad has them and they do not need me. I cannot ignore the noises of a dish settling into the sink and needing to be washed, or the ding of the laundry. Or the sound of the fan, or the sounds that indicate that some child is into something or two of them starting to argue, or .... Between the neurology that prevents me from filtering and the "I'm a mom" alertness that I cannot shut off, home is one of my least productive places, and I tried a sound proofed space and THAT was freaky because my brain knew there were supposed to be sounds and the lack frightened me, totally ruining my ability to get work down. If we ever move, I hope we can find a house with a room that has a glassed of room overlooking the great room so maybe I can have quiet enough with visual contact so I don't feel cut off. Those sound sensitivities are way harder to manage than the physical ones like the socks.

those of us who do have severe,or profound autism are definitely not understood more by the general public-if were to experience what some of us have gone through, through out life directly due to being classic autistic in the hands of people who shoud know better woud see how that coud be incorrect ,but it is correct we are given more tolerance than aspies;both moraly and lawfuly.

we need to be given more tolerance than aspies as we typicaly have high support needs, high complex needs with severe challenging behavior and lack the mental capacity to become high functioning, aspies need understanding and tolerance but they dont need it to the level we do.

everyone shoud have understanding, regardless of label, everyone shoud think with an open mind but that will never happen.
