I've been thinking about this. If I were in Abe's shoes, my gut would make me go save those pigs. But after I got back into the carriage, I'd think about it and say that if I hadn't done it, I wouldn't be able to live with myself. So, I think altruism exists but it can always be debunked by reflection (after the fact).
