How on earth do you learn nonverbal communication?

Nonverbal communication is a social skill, yeah. I wound up reading a lot of articles and watching a lot of videos for tips. It can be a lot to take in, but you don't have to learn all of it at once. Like many who've gotten good at it, it's something you study over time. Wouldn't expect to learn French in a week, would you?

Well, maybe some particularly brilliant people...

I've heard that reading fiction helps a lot with this. In modern fiction, the characters' body language is often described in words, and other parts of their intentions or emotions are apparent from other parts of the context.
