Do you have made up friend's?
Yep. Allow me to tell you about them.
Mark: Mark was a 10 year old imaginary friend I had between the ages of 3-7. He had black curls, a tan, brown eyes, often wore hoodies and jeans and had a pair of glasses. He was a supportive friend. I remember during lunch time in kindergarten I would sit far away from others with a book and read. I'd imagine Mark sitting next to me and reading with me. Mark was a really slow reader so I'd wait a few seconds to turn the page when I'd finished reading. Then I'd talk about the book with Mark in my head. I remember reading a book about dogs. I loved dogs and while talking about the book with Mark we decided to have a competition to see who could do the best dog bark, I lost. We eventually stopped hanging out when he 'moved to Germany'.
Chloe: Chloe was 8 and was my friend around between the ages of 5-7. She had long blonde hair, blue eyes and pale skin. She wore clothes that looked like they belonged to Barbie. Chloe was Mark's sister. Chloe was the encouraging friend. She tried to get me to try new things, she made me talk to other kids, sign up for activities and get me to wear pretty clothes. She eventually 'moved to Germany' with Mark.
Alice: Alice was 15 and she appeared when I was 9 and stayed until I was 12. My brother died and she was made to comfort me. Alice looked exactly like Alice in Wonderland. She would help me feel better about my differences, she always told me 'Don't worry, it's okay to be different, normal is too boring!' It always made me happy. When I first learned about Asperger's Alice was the one who pushed me to learn more. When I was looking up symptoms and saying them to myself I imagined Alice sitting next to me with a clipboard and a pen, ticking off things as I said them. She eventually left when I came to term that I was different and that's great! Alice jumped back down the rabbit hole and went back to Wonderland.
Other than that most of my imaginary friends are characters I made up for stories.
I also have those day dreams, sometimes my imagination just runs away with me, where i imagine i have friends, and im loved and cared about. Its always hard when i have to come back to reality where I have nothing.
Im loathe to admit it, but i've even had relationships in those day dreams, usually those times when im really lonely around holidays.
No imaginary 'friends' currently but right now i'm dating imaginary partners....since i'm not creative enough they're cartoon characters I really like...(yea one is my icon...woo...
)
Apparently this is actually somewhat popular in Japan, having an imaginary relationship. Makes me wanna move there, lol.
All the imaginary friends I had when I was young seem to have been replaced with my online friends.
Lots of imaginary conversations with real people... Lots of imagining that people like or dislike me more than they actually do. Lots of imagining people actually think about me.
I don't have enough or the type of feedback I need to know what's going on in relationships, so my imagination fills in the gaps.
Sure lots of that.
Daydreaming friendship and relationships counts as imaginary friend? Then I guess so.
I couldn't have put it into words better than that...!
I get the same thing!
I do imagine conversations with some people, but I also image myself as well. I imagine myself as a totally different character (one that I have come up with) ... it's not just focusing on friends. Even life in general.
I did even have dreams when I was younger, but I can't seem to remember any dreams now (if I even have any lol).
I think these are caused by strong desires/needs for friendship in real life, and to "fill" the need, the brain ends up imagining them to sort of calm itself.

I think your right, it is a sort of defense mechanism. I think they portrayed that in that tom hanks movie castaway. I recall it being said its a mechanism to prevent insanity from lonliness. It always made me feel bad, his excuse was he was trapped on a deserted island by himself. I am not on one, i just feel like im on one.
I'm not on an island physically either.
Although, socially, I am! And it appears you are as well.
Welcome to the island!
Can you survive the night?
