I run into that too, and I drink. But my capacity for alcohol is very limited, I don't get drunk so much as I get violently, uncontrollably sick, also I don't like the feeling of being out of control. But I know what you mean about people insisting that you drink or drink more than you are comfortable handling. I just think it's rude. I also think there are a lot of alcoholics out there whose lives revolve around alcohol to the extent that they have no other life (kind of like people whose lives revolve around church) and they either can't imagine or don't want to imagine any other options. And it seems like for a good segment of American society (especially in my socio-economic bracket) that that is all there is--church or bars. I live in an area that is known for its culture, we have great theater, concerts, etc., yet if I want to attend any of these things I have to go myself because my church-going/bar-going friends don't want to. In fact they think it is strange that I am not interested in either.

Another thing, why is it socially acceptable for NT's to get drunk/high on drugs and act in ways that if we do it naturally we get shunned and persecuted for?

I was a lot like you guys, I didn't even want to touch alcohol. I was extremely paranoid about it, and would refuse all offered. My friends thought it was odd, but didn't really pressure me that much.

I've recently started drinking, sometimes a fair amount... at parties and such... and I've learned a few things.

1: Alcohol doesn't really change who you are, at least as far as I found. It just kind of brings more 'interesting' parts about yourself to the fore.

2: Drinking alcohol socially is a way to form bonds. When everyone is getting silly and enjoying themselves... well you grow closer.

3: Beer is nasty; don't judge all beer off just one you drank. I've acquired a semi-taste to some beer, being that I can tolerate it... and in certain moods I'd want to drink it. But I don't like much of it... and that's okay... the alcohol spectrum has a multitude of interesting drinks...

4: If you have a tendency to think before acting, and you find that this prevents you from doing something... drinking tends to alleviate this. I become much more productive and driven after a drink. For me I think it's semi-medicating some of my ADD symptoms... but the results are noticeable... and useful.

So my point is, alcohol isn't a bad thing. And while the pressure to drink may be annoying, the act of drinking can be enjoyable... and not just for joining in with the 'herd'. Um and don't use this as justification for under-age drinking... I don't want any of that weight on my shoulders...

I am 34 and don't drink alcohol.

People seem to get offended when I decline alcohol and try to pressure me into drinking.

I end up reassuring people that I am not being judgemental about their alcohol consumption. I really don't care about their level of consumption.

I just don't want a drink of alcohol!

Same as.... apart from the fact that I do very occasionally drink alcohol. Possibly a couple of glasses of wine once or twice a year. Not being a drinker seems to be considered some sort of social leprosy and I used to get thoroughly fed up with having to justify myself. On several occasions I've ended up getting annoyed with people insisting on buying me a 'proper' drink. My response to that is that they can stuff it, and I'll buy my own orange squash!

Well everytime i go out with "friends" they do the same thing to me, it's tempting for me because i wanna know if it takes away the anxiety/fear i have for people i don't know (besides beeing an aspie i also have social anxiety disorder). Only one thing is keeping me from not drinking alcohol and that is because someone close to me died from substance abuse (alcohol in this case).

Also i don't like drunk people so i decided not to be something i don't like.

I just turned 21 a couple of weeks ago but STILL HAVE NO INTENTION of drinking beer, alcohol, etc. What's the point of getting drunk for the sake of fun? When you're drunk, you tend to carelessly say random things that may offend others, or do crazy foolish things that could get you in trouble.

Thank goodness no one has YET ever asked me to drink alcohol. I can find much better things to do than to get drunk.

At two light beers I'm having trouble moving. Alcohol doesn't inspire the feelings it seems to inspire in others for me. Makes me sleepy, makes communication more difficult, makes moving harder. Does that sound like fun? Only if it tastes good.

just tell them you are not interested in drinking. If they have a problem with that they should not be your friends.

i know it always seems as though i give out bad advice, however
first know if you have an addictive personality, findout from someone, what they think, if you could get hooked
i would tell them, if i drink once and respect your wish, as a friend, if i dont like it will you respect my wish, as a friend and stop asking me to drink

I see it a lot where I live, I guess it's like this everywhere. It's like people just can't have a good time without alcohol. Some people drink religiously but I realize a lot of it is because of peer pressure. It's hard for some to resist peer pressure but just remember that your peers don't know what's good for them and you'll be fine.

BLESSED ARE WE WHO HAVE ASPERGER'S
FOR WE DO NOT BUY INTO SUCH SOCIAL BOUNDARIES AS PEER PRESSURE

AND BLESSED ARE WE WHO CAN NATURALLY GET HIGH OFF OF LIFE
(definately bi-polar, does asperger's have that affect aswell?)
