"Hello?" - "Hi, this is..."- "Who?" "..."- "Oh!" Always happens. I can never make it clear who I am the first time round. It's dead embarrassing. Thank heavens for people who put your phone number in their Contacts, which means they can see who you are before they answer. That clears up the problem.

As for leaving messages, I'd sooner be hung, drawn and quartered. My voice sounds so stupid over the phone.

I have come to realise that I hate talking on the telephone. I've had two jobs where it was a major requirement (one was actually in the telecommunications industry). It just gets under my skin.

Hey, who here has ever smashed a telephone with their bare hands out of frustration?

Usually when I have to call stranger/classmate, I write my questions down first and then call him/her. If it's a close friend/relative, I don't have to write them down. When the phone rings, I can pick it up and talk finely. However, if the person who calls doesn't respond when I say 'hello', I panic (my imagination runs wild).

*rises hand* though the frustration was aimed at my mum more then at the phone and it was a mobile

parents always complained that I would not say hi to them just ask for my friend I always wondered what they could possibly be upset about they never wanted to talk to me normally why on the dam phone.

I have stopped answering the landline after I did one day and it was an automated message.

Does throwing a mobile phone at a wall count? And then watching it smash inside and turn off with the frustration rising to acute levels.. It wasn't the best idea.

I threw ours across the room. Miraculously, it didn't break completely- only the antenna came off, and that's easily fixed with our type of phone.

For messages, I think out in my mind what I'm going to say before I call the person, especially if it's someone who I don't frequently talk to on the phone. I also like to write down any questions I have to ask or the main point in calling.

I don't like talking on the phone, but I'm not completely unable to. It takes a lot of practice and fortunately there are people who I know IRL who have been willing and patient enough to put up with me while I've been learning. :)

Aside from talking to my parents when I call (and with them I just pick up and say "yes?") I avoid talking on the phone at all costs. Unfortunately sometimes at work I simply can't avoid it, and then I tend to talk fast and try to xfer the call to someone else as fast as possible.

My fear of phones is actually the main reason it took me so long to finally get to a therapist. Only reason I finally made it last week was because a concerned friend actually got in touch with her (the therapist..he is the one who referred me to her) and had her call me instead.

PHONES!! !

I really don't like PHONES...

I do say Hi, Hello, and such things like that but holding a conversation can be very hard for Me.

I do better holding a conversation on a FORUM than a PHONE.

Thank God for email and caller ID.
I rarely answer the phone, even with Caller ID.
Cell phones are the worst because the connection is always crappy and it's even harder to understand what people are saying.
And I'm the same about hating to leave messages. Yuck. :x

lol, yes indeed... Recently I've just had it totally unplugged. Much better that way and I don't get messages from people who expect me to call them back...

Phones should be abolished. I often don't answer the phone when I don't feel like talking - it's like someone bargeing into your house at any time of day without asking permission. I'm not too keen on SMSs either as people expect an instant reply. Also I either want to say lots and there isn't the space, or - under time pressure - I say the wrong thing and my BF (another one who doesn't like using the phone) then doesn't reply. That's probably why our relationship is failing.
