I love swearing. When I'm alone in the house, or with immediate family I swear all the time, sometimes just for the sake of it. I love the way the words sound, I love the creativity involved in stringing them together, and I love the cathartic effect it has on me. Sometimes when I'm alone I just march around the house making up filthy songs.
But I understand that some people hate swearing, and I try my best to be careful around them. It also takes a lot of creativity to avoid swearing, so I can appreciate that as a completely different challenge. When I'm around kids I'm all, "Gosh!" and "Golly!" and "Gee whiz!". I sound like a cartoon character.

I used to be super duper sensitive and get offended when somebody said a 4 letter word like "jerk, sh**, or f**k. Now I say these words in my head and in person due to frustration. It's like an initial reaction, but after a calm down slightly, I'll attempt to rationalize my annoyance using non offensive language as a verification.

I often swear. I dont see where this F bomb thing comes from. It is not a bomb, it is a word which has far more shock value than it deserves.

I see no reason to restrict my vocabulary from any word, including "f**k".

But if it bothers you so much, take a look into this site: nocussing.com.

I've never understood why certain words have so much meaning like that. You can say "duck", but if you replace the "d" with an "f" it will actually offend people, this makes no sense to me.

Beyond that, if you say "frak", that's fine, or if you type "f--k" that's apparently fine too. It's perfectly acceptable to point to the word, it's perfectly acceptable to say the word and let people know exactly what word you're saying, as long as you blank out one or two letters?

My advice to anyone who gets offended by swear words would be to face the reality that it's only a word, it can't cause physical harm, and to make a big deal out of someone swearing is absolutely pathetic.

Perhaps one should consider that for many people, (not all), F-bombs and other "cussing" words are a warning that social restraint is breaking down on the part of someone because they are reaching a level of anger or frustration near their limits of self control. In such situations language of that sort can be an indicator of physical danger. It may not be in every or most cases, but it is an indicator and any danger of violence is physically unsettling to others as we become alarmed and move toward "fight or flight" mode. Such disturbances to an otherwise placid situation are unsettling. When we avoid such words by exercising self control we are avoiding a social breakdown.

I am attuned to this concept because my own meltdowns are liberally punctuated by such "cussing" That such words function as a warning is socially useful, however that does not make the situation any less disturbing.

growing up, i knew old-line bible belters [none alive nowadays] who maintained the good book said that only god was privileged to be angry, no human could and still be pious. to these sorts, any outward expression of anger was a swear and thus proscribed. not only the real curse words but also their minced euphemisms, even grunts and moans of anger were a no-no. even a glower was a no-no. so no "darn you to heck" but just utter silence was the only proper response to somebody or something which was vexing one. in amuuurica at least, early television censors followed the same rule, not even minced oaths were allowed.

I think it's in poor taste.

Blabs, thanks for the history notes. Odd culture back then--and one I'd never have noticed. (I avoid Bible Belt stuff like the pox.)

my older brother is an old-line southern baptist, and he follows the same rule. i sometimes wonder if it is aging him prematurely, all those angry vibes bottled up within him and no outlet. i am reminded of something mark twain said about how when one was angry, count to four; when very angry, swear - "There ought to be a room in every house to swear in. It's dangerous to have to repress an emotion like that. Under certain circumstances, urgent circumstances, desperate circumstances, profanity provides a relief denied even to prayer."

If you get upset by an F word, just don't come to Ireland, is all I can say

Seems like it's Americans who get upset about someone saying the F word as opposed to innocent kids getting shot down in school. Please dont come back at me and say you're upset about gun deaths too, everyone in their right mind thinks that is immoral and unnecessary. PRIORITIES.

amuuricans have traditionally been nambypamby hypocrites about such trivia. we get upset at profanity [not pious] but not at the misbehavior of our government. we get upset when a tit is displayed during the superbowl, but not about the crimes of the GOP. disgusting.

Swearing is disgusting.

People who use bad words are worse than Hitler.

words are just vehicles for thought expression and as such are not "good" or "bad." it is the thoughts behind the words that are good or bad.

And as for that motherforking tw@t who said people who swear are "worse than Hitler", you're WAY too old to be looking for attention like that.
