Do people often act like you're invisible?
NTs are great for making me feel invisible, they might say one or two things to 'include me' but I can tell by the way they say it that they're not genuinely interested.
It's pretty sad to say, but most of my friends are just people that feel sorry for me, although they technically don't know what's wrong with me, I'm just different.
The rest of the people would just rather pretend i'm not there rather than deal with the extra effort required to communicate, it's frustrating.

People read off your face, subconsciously. If what they read doesn't fall into the range of NT-approved facial expressions appropriate for situational context, they will get freaked out by the uncanny valley syndrome. Your face is human but something about it is not like the other faces in here.
That is an interesting way of putting it. As I think of it, I get the feeling that other people feel this way when they first meet me. Some people get over it and some don't. It does irk me that despite the fact that I function very well in terms of the world around me and that I strive to deal with my handicap, people don't make much effort to see the real me "inside" the Autism.

Ever try watching Polar Express or Beowulf ? Before I got better at controlling my outside demeanor, I felt like a CGI character that's been designed to look very humanlike but something about them is off and it freaks people.
I feel the same way - the CGI character analogy is very appropriate. To some degree, I have gotten used to the reactions I get from others.
To relate this back to the question put forth by the OP, I think it is easier for people to ignore what they don't understand in the hope it will go away.

Most people don't actively approach me for conversation. I'm not upset about this coz I know that if lots of people were to talk to me, then I'd be more stressed out.
That reminds me of a funny thing about my conversational situation: I want to communicate with others but I get stressed out when others approach me. Ultimate catch 22. For this reason, I tend to have a fair number of brief, meaningless conversations with others that don't go anywhere.
That said, I do need to improve my overall verbal communication skills.

I'm exactly the same. I'l hope for people to talk to me and imagine how great it'l be but when someone actually does I get nervous and end it quickly then regret it for ages.
