Natural curiosity and skepticism are all fine and well but outright dismissiveness towards a condition that someone has lived with all their life, isn't. Would anyone tell someone with Bi-polar disorder that it's a load of crap, there's nothing wrong with you so just get over it, just because that person is managing to keep themselves together?

Yes, of their frank and tactless curiousity about you.

Dismissivenes, you say? Indeed, that is the part of it that I am asking you to spell things out for me. You are all sharing an experience and impression that you are all familiar with, and perhaps leaving out certain details that anyone else might need to complete the picture. Also, again, where lies the distinction between heartless dismissal and rational skepticism?

I might perhaps, for example, raise the question of psychotherapeutic soul searching instead of chemical straitjackets.

Yes.

Oh I don't mean I would. I mean the bipolar have to face this kind of crap too. We're not unique in this regard.

Heartless Dismissal
"Wow. That sounds pretty stupid. Stop being such a loser."

Rational Skepticism
"Really? That seems odd. I am a bit skeptical about this, can you tell me why you believe this to be the case."

I remain unclear as to how, exactly, the latter is manifest in the sort of questions and response as initially described.

Well I'm confused now too. If you're refering to the original post here, then I have difficulty in understanding how you could fail to see why this is offensive. If you're talking about a different post, then maybe what I said doesn't apply.

If you have trouble understanding when people are trying to be nasty to you, you are probably a very, very lucky person. (And I say this with complete honesty)

Sometimes people say things that are pretty nasty without realizing it. Sometimes people are so sensitive that you can't say anything to them without them blowing up. Depressingly often people say things that are intentionally offensive.

It's quite simple.
Really.

Scekeptism is asking for overwhemling evidence.
Outright dismall is claiming that it can't be true even in the face of overwhelming evidence.

Yes indeed, but how does all of this apply to the actual case at hand?
