Lots of people use their answering machines this way

When I worked I kept my phone plugged in case of an emergency need
for me at the jobsite. But now my phone has been unplugged for about 1 year.
I've never had an answering machine either. I stopped answering my e-mail.
I'm out of touch and out of mind.

I never answer the phone.

I use call display, so I can pick up if I feel like talking to the person who's calling. If I don't, they can leave a voice mail.

I'm usually the person who's being avoided and doesn't "take a hint" (though I'm not trying to sell anything of convert anyone.) I really wish people would just tell me they don't want to be my friend because it's hard to know if people are genuinely busy. Please just be honest. Hiding, avoiding and lying will only prolong an unwanted relationship.

What actually happened was that she called me on the friday morning, rather than the saturday or sunday and said that she would have to visit me right then because she had to work around her other friends schedule as they "worked" and (she assumed) I was not working. I told her that I had a job and I did have to work that day, so she pushed it abit and asked if she could come over when I was not working like in the evening of that day (friday) and I said that I wouldnt be available that evening. Then she called about six times over the weekend and I just didnt answer the phone. I know it was her because I had to press *69 to figure out who was calling, whether it was her or not.

I have confronted her during the birthday episode, as well as on some of the racist emails she sends out to her mailing list, and none of this has every sunk through the womans head, so in the end I decided to avoid the discomfort of confronting her yet again, and just not answer the damn phone.

And I AM going to get an answering machine, as soon as I can find one in a second hand store.

This woman obviously has a screw loose. I think you are wise to avoid her like the plague. She tried to call 6 times?! 8O

I've got the Australian equivalent of this one
Uniden 5.8GHz Cordless Phone with Digital Answering System and Caller ID
http://tinyurl.com/ncvf4
It's about $40

The thing I like best about it is that it beeps when it has a message (you can turn this off if you want) so I don't have to go look at it (unlikely) to know I have a message. The cordless handset with speaker phone setting is also very handy for those times where you get stuck on hold for ages. You can put the handset on speaker, and carry it round with you while you do other things, like the washing up.

mum's got one like the AT&T ones, hers works just fine.

It seems you can get them for around $10 to $15 if you shop around. It will be hard to find one second hand when the new ones are so cheap.
