Why is it no one has profile photos of themselves here?

How come you don't have your face as your avatar then?

I do it for privacy reasons. Mother, my coworkers, or anyone else in my offline life can't just enter usernames or photos on Google and find where I post online and what I'm associated with, nor can anyone online do that to find my Facebook, my work or volunteer information, etc. I'd like to share and explain those things on my own terms or not at all.

I spend all day fitting in. I want the freedom of living a life where I can say and do whatever I want without concern for social norms and the consequences of speaking my mind, and that means not connecting my online and offline lives. Some people can make a living off of it, but I'm not one of them. I can write about whatever I want, even controversial issues, and face the praise or judgment from behind a screen, not in school, at family gatherings, or the workplace. No one who takes offense or misinterprets can mail me weird things, show up to my house, make threads mocking my appearance, friends, or Asperger's, or give my boss, family, or friends false tips and gossip about me.

If people don't want to talk to me based on whether or not I have a face... oh well. There wasn't anything of value between us in the first place that I'm missing out on by using a Pokemon instead. There's always the real world if I miss comments on my hair.

Because

1. This isn't a dating site, so appearances aren't really an element to interaction.
2. Icons (and user names) can reveal more about a personality than a name or selfie.
3. Some people are still involved in a world which has not matured enough to treat 'non-nts' with any respect.

That being said, my avatar is chosen simply because it was the only photo handy at the time, and I seldom notice it anymore. Perhaps it is time for a more personality appropriate choice...

I like to be anonymous when talking about things I am ashamed of. I talk about my Asperger's more to members on WP than I do to anyone else in the world (maybe to a few close relatives too). But I find it less shameful when talking about it anonymously, and if I had my face in the picture under my name here, I wouldn't feel so anonymous.

If I did display a photo of myself, you probably would look at it twice and think ''are you sure you are an Aspie?'' Aspies say about all this stuff about different facial characteristics in Aspies and some sort of vibe in body language or facial expression and dressed abnormally, but I don't display any of that stuff. I just look like a normal 23-year-old (except when I'm having a meltdown!)

I'm self-conscious about how I look. So there are not many photos available for use. That, and my self-consciousness.

I don't want for everyone to see my picture. I someone really wanted to see my I would be willing to email a picture to them if they sent me a private message.

I'm not that interested in letting everyone know what I look like. I only give my picture to people who I am close with who want to see my picture.

It doesn't show up. We are careful here to go by our usernames. For certain, there are at least a few prominent individuals in this world who are Aspies but never reveal it professionally. Now, it might be known 'round the way' but not directly. I sometimes wonder why certain prominent individuals finally do reveal, but that's their prerogative, I guess.

In a sense, I wish I could be more open, but the world is not really copacetic with Asperger's. Sigh.

Actually, there are already programs existing and spreaded, that are able to recognize faces and search for photos with an similar face. This can cause problems in two directions. If I post here my real photograph, someone can take that for the software, so that it recognizes my face and then search as example on google photos for other photographs in the web, showing my face. The webadresses that googles delives you with the photographs, can then lead you to my identity. As well that it can work the other way, so I write an jobinterview E-mail to an company, normally including as well a photograph of me. If its a bigger company, then the jobinterviewer regularly nowadays does an webcheck about me, and if he is common with new technologies, then he can do so with my photo as well, search for other photos with my face on it in the internet, and could so receive the information, that I have a profile on Wrongplanet, and homepage for autists, if I used an profile photo showing my face.

I could use my Darth Mauline Helloween photo ^^, I think the horns and the make up would sucessfully "destroy" my face for that face identity programs. ^^
