netzero.net - commercial site. Sells internet access.
myspace.com - social networking site, not a charge service
facebook.com - see above

Just a couple examples.

edit: oh yeah, myspace and facebook make a profit. I forget that with all the ads removed. :P

Regardless of that, it is possible to get a domain that doesn't "match" your intended purpose. I'm not sure if that's the case with .org though. Definitely is for .net and .com.

Further edit:

no, wait, I'm an idiot. Slashdot.org has ads. I really doubt those ads solely cover costs of operations. Also has a parent.

It might just be that people read your posts, but don;t have much to say in response to them.

I read lots of posts on here, but don;t say much, and I ffind that not many people respond directly to my posts.

My only complaint about this site is that it's TOO big. I don't have time to read all the new posts!

I've been here almost from the start. Back then there were only a handful of members and we all knew each other on an intimate level. With the site growing like it is, we've all kinda lost that intimacy with each other and I think deep down inside that why it's driven away so many long time members.

I know what you mean. I never really fit in on big forums. It's the same in real life. I can be good in small groups, but not in big groups.

/me thinks about starting a new small Asperger's board using his new limited MySQL knowledge.

Although big boards can still be a good source of information as there are lots of people to answer your questions.

I think you're just experiencing some newbie frustrations. Give it some time and keep posting. As for the confusing emails you get from others just please keep in mind these things- This is an autistic website so you have people all over the spectrum on here. There are people with co-morbid conditions that may affect their language and sentence structure. Some people may not have a lot of formal education because they may have been cast off for being autistic/Aspie. There are also lots of younger people here and they are still learning how to write. And finally there are members from all across the globe so while English may be your first language, it may not be theirs.

Also you have a lot of very intelligent members who have so many ideas going through their minds at one time, so many things they want to share with or express to you that they type incoherently. Its an Aspie thing.

So just hang in here long enough to get your feet wet. 20 posts is not enough for you to feel comfortable at WP. There's lots of nice folks on here.

The only complaint I have with WP is the server issues. But I can't think of any other way I would have come to know someone like BazzaMcKenzie who is on the complete opposite side of the Earth from me.

I prefer Invision Power board. I liked using it, anyway, and so many modifications you could have with it.

The name "Invision" sounds familiar.

I believe there's a gameshow forum through it.

Yeah vB sucks! WP just needs more servers not a different software.

and its .NET .com means it sells stuff

I actually started a thread asking this in the wrongplanet.net discussion.

http://www.wrongplanet.net/modules.php? ... hlight=net

Squier is correct in the sense that the .net TLD traditionally means that the site is involved with internet infrastructure rather than a commercial site. The .com domain name was available the last time I looked (which is why I asked the question in the first place).

Intuitively, the .org extension would have seemed the most appropriate for this type of site, but Alex said that the .org was stolen.

The internet has grown to the point that these distinctions are not as clear as they used to be, so you can't really assume what the site represents based on the TLD.
