Because you have to have some other reason to volunteer there than doing it for respect unless you have no choice but to work there and that's just what you tell yourself to make you feel better

Working for free for a charity I'm not all that interested in wouldn't be something I'd do for respect

Ultimately Jamesy you just do what ever makes you feel good

Maybe he just likes to know people's ins and outs and that's it and there's no real harm in that but that's for you to work out
