Me & my brother are best friends. Other than that, there are no people who would likely call me "their best friend". When a friendship becomes tight, I usually sever the ties because it frightens me when people come too close.

I had two lovely friends a year ago. It was the first time I felt I had ever had close friends (I am 30). We did things together a lot. Then one started to distance herself from me. I couldnt (cant) understand it. Then the other. Now neither of them speak to me anymore. And yet only a year ago they were so nice to me, they seemed to accept my differences. They both accused me of being possessive and making them feel guilty to be with other friends. I thought they cared so I tried to do the same. I cant just stop that. Maybe I was possessive expecting them to want to spend time with me, but dont friends want to do that normally? Why would they want to do things with other people and exclude me? Why not just invite me along too? Both now seem to hate me and yet are friendly with people they used to b***h to me about behind their backs. Obviously I must be considered worse than these people. But now they are gone, although I was very sad all this year I am relieved finally - I think maybe life is better without close friends like that. I cared too much and I got hurt because I wanted friends so much. I will be wary about doing it again.

I have over a dozen best friends and they are always willing to restate that.

Yes, and oddly enough, it's with another guy who's more on the severe end of the Asperger scale. Met him in college and we just kinda understood each other. He told me he felt like a junkyard dog; could be the nicest, sweetest dog in the world, but nobody would ever know because of the implicit assumption those dogs are always mean.

I don't think most NT people get that. Many years later, I find out that in High School, tons of people thought I was arrogant or purposefully distant. Did none of them consider I might be shy or unwilling/unable to state things in less than a matter-of-fact manner?

So until college, all my "friends" were mostly just acquaintances. The fact this thread exists at all, suggests my story isn't uncommon. So while I am someone's mutual close friend, nineteen seems a little late for having one.

I actually have a lot of friends, and at one outstanding guy who had told me I'm his best friend. Once I got to the point where I made some friends I guess I figured if I didn't have a charming personality then I'd have to win people over by being a great friend in other ways. I was the one the could count on to be there when they needed something or someone to have an honest conversation with. It works well as a filter too, since the people who want to be your friends value you for non superficial reasons. Of course it took years to figure out how to avoid being used, but I am pretty good at spotting those people very early on these days. Of course I'm not the first one people call when they just want to have some fun, but hey you can't have it all.

I know I don't have any friends, I never did. It hurts a bit.

No. I'm actually getting kind of sick of caring more for people than they do for me.

I definitely have friends that I would consider to be the best out of all of my friends, but until recently (at the age of 26/27), I don't think that anyone has ever considered me to be their best friend, and even now, I am not certain.

I was convinced I had a best friend (and he told me i was his), until he started hanging out with some girl and I never heard from him again. He'd always make plans to do stuff with me but then ditch me for his girlfriend. Now I believe there really shouldn't be such an existing term as "best friend" ;/

I used to have someone who I considered a best friend, and she said I was hers too. I still consider her my best friend, but I don't know about her since I never really see her or talk to her anymore.

I don't see any good reason to have call each other "best friends" or "Bffs" anyway. Why put a label on it? Why not just let your friendship define itself?
