I saw a photo of my sister hugging with her husband with the background of the beautiful beach in Thailand, it was the icon for her profile. If only all her FB "friends" knew all the ugliness and dirt and cruelty behind that picture. They looked like the perfect marriage living the perfect life, while they're the worst scum of humanity. However, as my cousin told me: "I know it's all rot behind their image, but I don't care. I still choose my friends by how they look on the outside. It gives me the (false, I know) illusion that life can be beautiful." None of my cousins are in touch with me, they all worship my sister, for her ability to "look like a postcard", as my cousin said. They all have picture-perfect FB accounts, while the horror that hides behind is so much that I can't even write it here.
FB is just a self-promotion website. A very easy one, because you only need photos and writing to create an illusion. That's why it's so popular - anyone can create an image, any image they want. Same as celebs and aristocrats have gossip and social columns in the newspapers/magazines, only online and available to all. In the past, you had to be chosen to be written about. On FB, anyone can be written about, because people write about themselves. The info is as reliable as in those magazines. If you're not into marketing yourself as a product for socioeconomic advancement, you have nothing to do there.
However, someone above said there are very interesting groups by specific interests, and since so many people who used to enrich internet forums are now doing so on FB, I will browse and give it a try.
