I have a very complicated view of them.

I identify with the subculture. I consider myself gothic. Sort of. Kind of. XD But I also hate a lot of things that some goths love, such as Bauhaus or BDSM. I also have serious geeky elements and what not, so I'm not sure I could call myself a "goth," exactly.

I often like a lot of things that are associated with goths by the media but most goths don't necessarily like being associated with. XD So I guess I like the stuff that it's stereotypical for goths to like. I even like some stuff that most goths actually DO like. I love the fashion style (and wish I could partake in it, but it's not that simple--good goth clothes for guys are quite hard to find, are not always comfortable, and are often way too expensive).

As for goths as people, well, it varies quite a bit. Some are very nice. Some are cold as can be. I often feel like I'm just not cool enough to hang out with them. I tend to not like goth guys, who can often be achingly elitist, and as for goth girls, that depends if they're the cool kind or the cold/bitchy/sadistic kind. Plus, most goth girls where I live are either far too old for me (like in their 30's), or taken, or quite frankly fat. Usually 2 or 3 of those.

This stinks, because I'm basically obsessed with the idea of dating a compassionate, attractive gothic girl...it's practically a fetish. If a girl isn't gothic I have MUCH less of a chance of being romantically interested in her. I can't help it. I just love the look. I think there's nothing hotter than a goth girl in a black corseted Victorian-era dress, with black lipstick and eyeliner, skin pale as can be, decadently-detailed hair...though, she'd obviously have to have a decent face and body and all that or it just comes across as an ugly person trying to be hot and just seeming uglier. XD

That is so true. A lot of it is expensive, although you can very easily go for a much cheaper look, the Deathrock look for instance is acceptable and looks really cool and personally it's the kind of thing I go for. Try looking it up on Wikipedia.

Also Metalhead females lately have a tendency to go for the Goth look, so you could look into that.

Hah, a lot of those girls call themselves goths as well as metalheads, though. Anyway I tend to like them more than actual goth girls but they're not very easy to find where I live.

Don't really have an opinion either way, never really had much expierence with people in to 'goth'. The closest I have come is a boy that I attended boarding school (High School) with. He liked the gothic style back clothing. He even made a wooden coffin to sleep in. From what I gather he actually did until the school director proscribed it.

Reminds me of the forensic character on NCIS, Abby Sciuto.

Also had a roomate for a brief time that was in to pagan Celtic stuff. Not really sure if he was in to goth or not as he didn't really dress the part. He was always claiming to make some sort of aphrodisiac from rocks and water.

If they're anything like that girl I couldn't get with, then I'm going to try to give them a wide berth.

She was far too well - satanic? She said the immortally frustrating line "Life's too short honey". lol - if she really cared she'd have thought 'This guy has aspergic tendencies... he might struggle with this' and then when the other guy wanted her she could've thought 'But the other guy is clearly struggling with this... I should give him the chance... as he clearly likes me'

I don't like her ways - I find her to be an alpha satanist...

Have a non conforming aspie in the mix? I'm going to be very annoyed with her. Perhaps it's good that I didn't get with her...

I'm afraid this perception of mine might carry on with other goth's, but I can still be civil... I won't now hate all goth's, just that - I might have a slight prejudice that I can't help. I'm afraid. :( Uncharacteristic of me... but prejudices can be built in.

Well - maybe not... maybe I'm just prejudiced to that girl.

Well, samtoo, most goths aren't Satanists...a surprising amount are actually Christians. (The Pagan trend was pretty big there, and still is, but it's starting to die down.) A lot are atheists or agnostics, too, but that's totally different. Satanism is generally more associated with black metal bands who try to seem badass by saying they worship Satan. XD

As far as clothing and expenses--- many "cool" articles of clothing can be picked up at thrift stores and second-hand shops for pretty cheap. I've gone to the Salvation Army and gotten an entire outfit for under $10. Not always easy or possible ( depends on what's there when you go) but it can be done. Many "goths" are budget conscious and also have to pay bills.

Well I like the gothic makeup/clothes(though what I wear when I "goth up" is pretty tame since I don't like to show a lot of skin) and I see it as a form of self expression. I don't let my mom or dad talk me out of taking off black lipstick when I wear it(which is pretty much anytime I wear lipstick).

I like to think of myself as ethereal.

I know one woman who is into gothic style and music but also doesn't show alot of skin--- she's Muslim. She's really nice and all, knowing what it's like to not fit in ( how many Muslim Goths are there, really?). Stereotypes are meant to be broken...

I’ve gotten fed up with the Gothier than thou bull that I’ve been seeing online. It’s a label, just like on a can of soup.

I used to think I was one until I was informed of what one really is. Now I am just an admirer of trad goth music and fashion.

I am not a Goth, and I don't have problems with them. Then again, I don't know any. My town is so conservative (unusually so for a town with 105,000 people), that if there were goths, they wouldn't show it.

In my town, one would be considered an outcast simply for not being Southern Baptist. I can only imagine what the goths would be feeling.

Through most of my life I had contacts with Goths.
Most people I know are Goths, although I'm not.

Aspies in general can easily merge into that subculture, that respects eccentricity and unusual social behavior.

Goths are tortured souls who want to express their individuality by labelling themselves, wearing a uniform and being generally miserable and introspective by default. Very much a moody teenage thing. In the UK they seem to be obsessed with whining about chavs.

I don't like goths, but then I don't like any labeled cultures really. Labels such as goths often contradict themselves and are social extremes who look down on all the other social extremes.
Then again I usually have too much going on in my head to stick with one thing anyway.
