I've found confidence to be controlled by other people mostly. When you do something bold & daring that requires confidence, other people will either encourage you or discourage you depending on whether they feel you deserve that level of confidence.
I've seen different people tell the same joke to a group of peers. The more popular one gets laughs, while the less popular one gets ridiculed or ignored.
It's important to begin with a lot of confidence, as it's the only way to reach your top potential, but in time, everyone is cut down to the appropiate level society believes they should be at.
