Something I recently realized is that I might not enjoy observing other people more than interacting with them, I just ... am way better at reading them when I don't need to interact.
When I am the target of social behaviour, or when I am supposed to interpret some behaviour out of context my mind suddenly turns fuzzy (no better way to describe it) and I don't like that feeling. It makes me do things that in hindsight turn out to be stupid and avoidable.
I also observe less than I'd like to (and less than would be good for training) because I am scared of being taken as offensive or even be talked to.

... does this sound familiar? Do you have any ideas how to cope?

Well... this is true for me, when watching movies.
When I'm watching a movie, I can most of the time "read" the charaters very well, but it never works in real life.
Even though I sit by the side-line. Maybe it has something to do with, that you almost never get a confimation that you guessed right in real life.
Or more likely, because movie-makers are trying really hard to give you clues.
