I know that this is not a situation that most people with AS put themselves into or if they do, they may not be successful, but just imagine.

Let's say that you are in a club on a dance floor with a number of college age students. You are able to talk to your male friends when they aren't dancing or with a girl no problem. There are even a couple of girls that you've know for a long time and are used to your personality that you are able to talk to.

One thing that I have found is that people notice the abnormal occurances more than the normal. Thus, even if you are talking to friends for most of the time, when you are sitting around by yourself and look lonely or bored, people come up and say "Loosen up and have a good time" only making the situation more awkward. What to do then?

Well it is a dance party so the logical thing would be to dance. Trouble is if one doesn't have the skills to ask someone dance with them without it being awkward, then you are left sitting around. Confidence isn't the issue. It's a lack of skill issue. Does anyone have ideas about how to ask another person to dance at a dance party without making everyone around feel uncomfortable?

I just dance by myself, obviously. Not as socially acceptable for guys, apparently.

Look for a girl in the crowd who is not dancing but moving to the beat. Like head bopping , arm movements. Go up and say, " you looking like you; like this music (or want to dance), care to join me?
There were times I desperately wanted to dance but no one asked me. I could never figure out why, other than I was not beautiful.

You could try shooting at their feet.

Old spaghetti western reference. Please do not try this at home.

Hmmm... not a situation I would be likely to find myself in. You could be non-specific about it and declare to the group "I love this song, anyone want to dance?" It would save you electing a target.
