In conversations with neurotypicals, I'll sometimes see them make this facial expression---> D: after they have finished sharing something with me (a memory, statement, story, reply, etc).
I don't get why they make this particular expression. It really looks like D: Their lower lip is kind of stretched downward and widened and they look down. Mouth slightly open. It looks like an embarrassed face but I know that these people probably aren't 'embarrassed'. I can't tell if it's because they are irritated/annoyed/creeped out by my social deficits or if they didn't feel like I was listening. Or if they're worried about me judging them. (I'm quiet)
What confuses me about it is that I see it mostly with people who seem confident and probably know that they're smarter/socially superior to me.

Does anyone know what that face means? I really wish I knew because it makes me feel like I'm missing out on a major social cue since it happens so often.

I think it might be a self mocking " I can't believe I just revealed that" kind of face.

Maybe their surprised :o or in mild shock? I have no idea but it depends on the context of the situation.

If this expression is made during an online conversation, then this D: face can quickly be assumed as an expression of sadness or shock. It's normal among people who use the internet often.

However, it's more difficult to justify in the case that the person(s) makes this very same face in real life... maybe it could be that they're making a funny face in order to try and make light of the situation? You know, just so their sense of humour still shines through and that they're not totally blue about it.

I hope this helps somewhat. :3
