If you have a choice, sit next o the people you know best, and don't hag the conversation.

It all boils down to what MisterSpock said.
Surround yourself with people who accepts you for who you are.
Remember not to trust anyone.
Although they are your peers and your workmates - they are not your friends. They only accept you because they have to work with you and if they were not being paid to be there - they wouldn't be there and they wouldn't be available - to be your friends.

Work is a main means of socialization for most people.
Take away a persons job and you do not just take away their income - but also their means of socialization.

Remember if you act inappropriate - they might use your one time actions at the dinner against you and you could end up loosing what you think are your friends and eventually your job.

As someone else said on this forum - the world is full of a**holes..

generally have middle-of-the-road expectations, and plan to treat yourself to something nice afterwards like a movie.

Oh, volunteers in my experience have always been very nice people! :D
Just relax, be friendly , try to make eye contact, don't butt into conversations, but do ask questions about points that intrigue you.
A lot of volunteers (not all, but some) are trying to make friends and connect, with their own social short-comings, they fear showing.

Relax

I'm glad it went well. :)

About the anxiety, one approach which has helped me is to try to avoid the second-order type of thing, being anxious that I'm anxious! Instead more of the zen approach, okay, I'm anxious, so be it.

I was going to make a horrible joke about implanting cameras, spying and government. But it turns out that your night out was fine.

well, I wouldn't count on THAT quite yet
There's a lot of work involved in a relationship
That's YOU paying attention to HER and making her feel special
I hope you feel that way, or nothing is going to come of it

I get anxietyposting on WP about my anxiety not letting me post on WP
how's that for a catch 22?
