I was listening to the radio, and they said that the qualities that make somebody unpopular are likely to make them successful as adults. Do you agree with that "Geeks shall inherit the Earth" theory? The people with superior social skills and charisma usually move up through the company with greater ease than those who don't connect so easily, so I don't know if I agree with that. That seems like one of those myths that everyone knows is a myth, but they say otherwise.

well, lets put it this way; without the geeks, the charismatic NTs have no companies to get to the top of.

yes, they do walk over our backs, but if a few of us at the right places decide to leave, for whatever reason, there will be a hole in their bridge which they will fall trough.
simulary; if a few of us stand tall at the right place, we will block their progress altogether, or he has to resort to real violence; hurting him more then it will us.

so in short; i do believe geeks inherit the earth, but most will be happy to let the jocks take the face; that at least means the jocks will also get the blame if something goes wrong ;)

just because you have the skills and the know-how, you wont succeed. I really do believe the largest factors are who you know, Social/Emotional Intelligence, and be lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time.

sheer brute-strength brainpower can overcome lots of other faults- geek-in-chief bill gates being a prime example, but much of wall street [the number crunchers] and silicon valley [north and south] are full of such folk also. howard stern is another example of somebody naturally geeky but with superior intelligence giving him an overpowering edge. and look at einstein. IOW it is brainy geeks with a superb upbringing [or exceptionally brainy geeks who have enough mental horsepower to overcome a crappy upbringing] who grow up to be successful. the bulk of these folk started with poor social skills but learned to manage themselves sufficiently in society, due to their extremely high-horsepower brains.

I agree that geeks shall inherit the Earth is largely a myth driven because of the popular technology of these times.

Yeah, that's probably all it's meant to be, is commentary on the move to a technology driven society. It gets mistaken for "the unpopular grow up to be successful," which I don't think is the given that people make it out to be.

Lets get clear on what you mean with succes first. When people on this forum mention succes i immediatly hear things like popularity and having a job high on the social ladder. Really >? this is what succes is, i dont think so.
I think the ultimate form of succes is happines. If you can be happy with Nothing at all no people no high job just yourself and the basic needs then that is true succes. I think of budhist monks when i hear succes. Succes is when you smile at random people on the street. Succes is when you are afraid of going to the mall but you do it anyway.

Intelligent people have far more potential to go to great hights with happines and deep pitts of depression.
Your average joe has far more resistance to being miserable but also has far less potential for creating happines in his life.
He doesn't have the brain power to think about the outside word in relation to his inside and figure out the best way to make him feel good.

Ignorance is bliss is true to some level, ignoramus will be more persistent in his beliefs and not let bad information bring him down as easily. His rock hard beliefs also keep him from reaching a state where he can trully feel good.

I think geeks have more succes later on IF they get the right information so they can put it to use. Its like applying their brainpower and analytical mind NOT for science but for their own well being. If you can remind yourself every minute of the day that you need to observe yourself and think about how can i make my day better. What would be the most beneficial. Then you are sitting on gold. I forget this a LOT, but when it does poppup i always make better decisisions.

there are different levels of success. some days though, one really has to scrape the bottom of the existential barrel to find a little success that one can point at and say to the world and nobody in general, "see, i am NOT a total failure after all!"
