I'll probably forget it tomorrow though, but apparently “thank you” doesn’t mean “that was a good meal.” It means “I’m grateful you took time out to make me food.” So even if the food was sh***y, you should say thank you.

Ha! I struggle with BS like that too. It seems illogical to thank someone for doing a shoddy job but that's what society expects you to do.. sigh.

I take it you learned this the hard way.

For future reference "I'm sorry" doesn't necessarily mean "I'm sorry for that thing I said or did that has caused you to become upset." Frequently NT's use it to mean "Get off my case and give me what I want."

Not always the case for me... Rarely, actually, as I basically never eat anything I know I won't like (and consequently have a very limited diet.)

But I know 'tis the case for some people. I'm also guessing you learned the hard way.

You should ALWAYS say thank you if someone tries to do something for you, even if it ends badly. Otherwise they won't bother in the future.
