I can never talk to people my age. I can talk to older or younger people, but not people my age. Every time I try to talk to people my age I either run away, only say hi or say something really stupid. I can talk to people my age once in a while, but I can only do that if I'll "never see them again". I've had this problem since I could remember. Does anyone else have this problem or just me?

Lots of people on the spectrum have this problem. I have only just started to semi enjoy talking to people my own age, and I am much older now. They are more interesting for starters, than they seemed to be when younger.

I do much better with older and younger as well. I think it is because I don't behave/feel like someone my age "should" feel like. But I am not sure how that is supposed to feel. I think I just blew my own mind which is not uncommon. I think what I mean is, sometimes I feel like a combination of an 80 year old and an 8 year old at the same time?

Funny story... I went into a video store one night and there happened to be a guy, same age as me, working behind the counter. I knew the guy only from being in the same class at school. When I walked in he said, "Hey man, what's up?". I was not prepared to talk to someone after only being in the store for 2 seconds, so I replied with, "I don't know". I then turned around and pushed on the pull only door in an attempt at a hasty retreat. I am laughing right now. That guy must have thought I was on some serious narcotics.

Always been a problem for me. I think it's because when someone's your age, there's an expected similarity or common bond. Of course as aspies, we're similar to nobody.

At least with an age gap of 5+ years, difference is expected.

I guess it really depends on what age you are. When I was a kid and teen I couldn't talk very well to my peers. Now that I am an adult things are different.

I'm exactly the same way. The school's theory on this was that people my age had "social expectations" which I could'nt meet, but the younger ones didn't and the older ones would be more patient and leniant. I mostly talk to people younger than me, or people who have similar interests.

I was the exact same way. Now that I'm in my thirties, I don't seem to have that problem any more. So, wait it out.

Yes, it's me. I get carded. One girl who carded me, actually yelled "omigod!" and put her hand over her mouth. She started laughing and said, "I didn't know you were that old!" I normally take getting carded as a compliment but there was something about that moment that didn't feel entirely complimentary! LOL Most of the time, the clerk raises their eyebrows in surprise. I look mid-twenties, not 33. That's fine by me. My husband's ex-wife thought I was 19. He let her think that for a year before I yelled at him for not correcting her and then he told her the truth!

What you don't see in that avatar there is my gray hair or the little wrinkles that are appearing around my eyes, nor do you hear my knees and my neck cracking. I FEEL 33! Heck, I feel older than that!

when i was adolescent i could only seem to be understood by adults. there was zero social communication between me and people my own age. but as an official old fart, there is zero communication between me and people my adolescent age, and still no social communication between people who, age-wise, are supposed to be my peers. i do get along fairly well with senior citizens, though. i feel like one years before i am to become one.

LOL, I have gotten this reaction all my life. I got carded up until age 40. Even now, people don't believe my age. My appearance seems to lag 15 years behind my actual age. 8) When I first met my current boyfriend, he was afraid to approach me because he thought that I was much younger than him.

Wefunction, did you post any more pics on WP because I thought the same thing you look like you could be a teenager!

The reason I like to have a swimsuit picture as my avatar is because I don't want people to think I'm 12.( being short and thin with a baby face)
