I have this problem where I will be having a conversation with someone and I stumble over my words a lot. I think I am expected to speak faster than I can process my thoughts. I feel like people get irritated with me very easily. Does anyone have any suggestions for helping with stuttering and pauses in speech?

I think it is anxiety related from personal experience. I used to have more of a problem and my aspie son has trouble. Personally I think it is more a matter of thoughts moving faster than the mouth.

I sometimes stutter because I have Essential Tremors & they can affect my voice. It's mostly when I'm tired, stressed, exited, nervous, or when I'm talking a lot. It was worse when I was a teen & more nervous & stressed because of school & it got better for a couple years after I graduated. But it got a lot worse a couple years latter when I started taking psych meds; some meds like anti-psychotics list stuttering & slurring in the side-effects when they are advertised on TV.

Stutters are neurological (only rarely mental-health related).
As for me, I am more likely to stutter when my brain is not able to facilitate good speech. Things that can inhibit that are stress, overstimulation, fatigue, forgetting to eat, or generally feeling neurological (movement tics, uncomfortable skin sensations, prickling).

I don't believe anxiety causes it, it seems more like whatever causes anxiety also causes stutters. I don't have research on that but I didn't used to stutter, and also I do not feel anxiety when I stutter (though I get frustrated when I can't communicate). Hopefully this helps.

I'm not always nervous when I stutter but I sometimes am. My stuttering gets worse when I get nervous about it. I haven't been having much problems since I quit working & taking psych meds a few years ago but it got even better since I started taking Buspar for my anxiety a few months ago

That's a "spoonerism". I love spoonerisms.

I used to have this problem quite a lot. I think it's a combination of social anxiety and slow social processing speed. To this day, I'll still have problems with it sometimes...in some social situations, (with very socially skilled NTs) most group conversations go far too fast for meand I feel inadequate as it's hard to chip in and say something.

One thing that has helped is to remove the focus on feeling awkward and more on the words of the conversation. It helps if you are in a particular mindset for being more receptive to words and meaning rather than yourself and how you appear to others. I meditate in my head a few minutes before meeting someone to take the edge off, and if things get too anxious I duck into the bathroom for a few minutes.

It doesn't solve my tendecy to gert tongue-tied, but it helps conversations run smoother.

I used to stutter when I was younger, not much, but noticably, and I still have a problem of involuntarily using spoonerisms. The stuttering vanished over time.

I actually stutter more now than when I was younger. It seems mostly due to word-finding problems, though, so maybe it's not technically stuttering.

I use to stutter a lot when I was younger. I still do it now sometimes, and then people will take advantage of me. This one time in the gym locker room some douches tried to tell me that "we know the gym rules BUD" all I did was ask them politely to move their things off the bench so I could have some space and I began to stutter when I told them I wasn't trying to be rude but I had AS. They interrupted me and told me they knew what AS was and laughed and left.

I stumble over words and pause a lot when I'm really nervous or put on the spot. Even though I know exactly what I want to say and I'm not nervous about the encounter or social contact, I'll get nervous for no reason and sound like a blithering idiot sometimes.
