Tonight I decided I was going to order a pizza. The delivery driver came, I paid, they left, all went well. As I'm walking back to my room with yonder pizza, my mom asks if I gave them a tip. I say no I did not. She get all pissy about it. Apparently you're always supposed to tip them, even though it says this nowhere on the menu nor do they say anything about it on the phone while ordering. The place I ordered from, I worked at myself for over a year in high school. Nobody said anything then, hell I got maybe 4 tips in that entire time.

Why am I expected to pay more than is stated on the menu? Furthermore, why am I expected to magically know this when nobody says a thing about it? Grr.

(Or is my mom just stupid? That would explain this.)

Well your mom should've understood that it wasn't something you may have picked up on because you're Aspie, and may not have had much social interaction in your life to where you would've learned about tipping on your own. I mean, they should teach it in public schools because it does require math.

I recenlty started a job as a driver for domino's, and its in the tips that we earn money. Domino's only pays me $5 an hour. some nights when i'm working i'll earn more than what they are paying me in my tips and mileage.

Tipping seems to be common knowledge, in the US at least. That way you might want to look at it, is by giving the pizza delivery guy a tip, you're paying him money for taking time to drive the pizza over to your house. The menu only lists prices for food. Think of the tips as a delivery charge.

Tipping is generally a good idea. It isn't required, but you still probably should.

Delivery people don't get make much money, and generally need tips.

But don't tip just because people give you a hard time about it. Do it only if you think it's the right thing.

Tipping inthe UK is kinda differant (well as far as I know) generally most people tip in resturants or whatever when they are going out to eat, the tip is if they are or not happy with the service, food, waiter/waitress etc etc. but rinning up for getting something taken to your home...I've never given a tip there because its really no the same kind of service.

Whenever we order a pizza, we don't normally tip them. We only give tips to someting like haircuts, restaurants, etc.

Tipping is an American thing isn't it?

Kinda like you expect people to know the earth goes around the sun... you expect people to tip there, you know? If I went there I probably wouldn't because people don't tip in NZ. :/

australians dont tip either.
your mom was sortoff right, if you want to fit in you have to kinda tip, but from your own direct experience you didnt recieve any tips frm working aqt the same restaurant, so in your aspie mind it was ok not to tip because you didnt get any right?

i understand you but i also understand that tipping is kinda expected in most places.
even a little bit, most delivery dri=vers are university students. they scrimp for their money then piss it up at the weekends.
i do tip but i have to think about it every time it will nevr come naturally to me.

I remember the first time I took a taxi-cab, the driver asked for £11.90, so I gave him £12 and then asked for my 10p change. The look he gave me was SO filthy that I realized right away that I'd done something horribly socially inadequate. I later asked my mom about it and she told me that it's pretty much expected that you should give the driver a 'tip'. I was so humiliated at the faux pas I made that since then, I have always made sure to give a tip to anyone who provides me a service, unless it clearly says 'service included'. I've been told I'm too generous with my tips... supposedly it's 10% - 15%, depending on the quality of service... but I usually give more because I'm afraid of getting a dirty look again. Better to be safe than sorry... right?

You are supposed to tip because it shows how much you like waiters' and delivery peoples' service.

Generally, we tip 15% of our whole meal here in America.

I think your mom wants you to be well mannered because you're her son and she wants to know she did a good job bringing you up to be a polite young man.
but I can see why you are frustrated.

In Denmark we don't tip, you can tip taxies and pizza delivery. I tip when I get good service. There's this one pizza place where a young mexican comes to my door and always is smiling and happy, I always tip him.

Maybe your mom wants to order from that place again. A bad tip may result in "extra" products being delivered with your next order.

There already was a stated delivery charge. I understand the job pays for s**t, but that's not my fault. When I was there driving was the easiest job..

See, if there is a delivery charge, I don't see the point of tipping. Pizza places are different, some charge and some don't. Some delivery people get paid according to how many deliveries they make, like a bonus or something.
Thai food is different, they don't charge and they probably don't have insurance or anything to cover using their personal cars. I tip them because they are providing an extra service and are very friendly when the arrive. I would tip if I were in their restaurant, so I am giving something I would have given them anyways.
