When I was in 9th grade, I couldn't shut up about electrical circuit theory, science and computers LOL. One day my friend pulled me aside and gently said "No offense, but you talk too much about 1 subject". Although he was trying to be constructive, I felt totally devastated that day, like I was 100% worthless to him.

IDK, I'm not told I talk too much about anything, and I just get paranoid about it, because when I was a kid I was treated badly for either talking or any other display of what I enjoy. Really, If someone posted a 'Bun, shut the f**k up about...' I wouldn't care less about that - in fact I'd be somewhat relieved.

When I was 14 and the anime Naruto was my special interest, I once talked about it to my mom for 2 hours straight. Then she told me, in the kindest way possible, that she needed a break from listening to it.

Other than that, I haven't been told to stop talking about my interests. In fact, recently in another thread, a couple of members told me that they enjoy hearing about my interests. :)

When I was younger I annoyed people because I talked about Cats all the time.
And when I became an ABBA fan I talked about them all the time and so I try not to talk too much about anything because I don't want to annoy people.

When I was younger, it was science related things. I drove my parents insane with that. Now all I talk about is anime and Japanese culture, but it's okay since the majority of my time spent socializing is in an anime club anyway. Anyone not interested in that will usually tell me to shut up or something, so I just stay quiet during those times :?

As a teen, I would talk about movies all the time, and at times essentially speak in quotes. The group I hung out with eventually told me not to, in a hurtful enough way that I learnt my lesson and actively avoided any mention. So much so that I actually started disliking even watching movies.

The internet has made things so much easier, as an adult I found a peer group in a message board devoted to the tv shows I was obsessing about (basically the Whedonverse), so as long as I kept the topic mostly off the table in RL conversations, I was fine as I was able to let loose on the net. That is probably true of most special interests these days.

Computers, mainly.

I realized very quickly that no one really cares. So I got a job as a computer technician, and found I can talk at great length about computers and anything to do with them to my co-workers. I do sometimes lose them, though. Our knowledge is in different areas, so I feel like when I talk, I come across as an arrogant and pedantic jerk.

Also, politics / religion. I'm a very opinionated person and hold my convictions quite strongly, much to the annoyance of people who disagree with me. I'll sometimes beat them over the head with facts even knowing that it will never change anything. Oops.

My kids are crafty. They have figured out that if they want to stay up later, all they have to do is get me talking about science.
