Why do people make assumptions about people/things without proven facts to support there judgements?

Does it all come down to people trusting there gut instinct? The non rational side of humans basically?

Could be ignorance, too. People only know 1 or 2 things and they pick from those, without thinking about how there may be other possibilities that they don't know about.
